Big Art Day is today, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Sharadin Art Building, Room 120. Please join the Fine Arts Department for the 2011 BIG ART DAY. This year, we are welcoming alumni Marie Getz, an art therapist and psychotherapist living in Colorado; Matt Smith, a staff photographer for The Express-Times in Easton and the owner of a very active freelance real estate photography company; and Zach Lindenberger, a technical administrator for the Foundations Department at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. They will talk about their art careers and share their experience in the field after graduating from Kutztown University.

Be there for Bearfest 33 – Students enjoyed the sunny weather Thursday afternoon at BEARFEST 33 featuring “Pudding, Pirates & Pixie Dust.” The pudding slide was a blast! The Kutztown University Department of Elementary Education is pleased to announce the 13th Annual Children’s Literature Conference at Kutztown University, Saturday, Apr. 16. KU Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend a special presentation by Pat Mora and Jerry Pinkney, Friday, Apr. 15 from 2 - 3 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium.


The Kutztown University Choir conducted by Dr. Dennis Williams will present a performance of Beethoven's Mass in C Major with full orchestra and chorus, and featuring soloists who are Voice Major alumni, graduates with a KU Music degree:  soprano Kathryn Bonilla, alto Jen Jaynes, and tenor Steven Kell. The bass solo will be sung by Edward Bara, instructor of music at Muhlenberg College. There are no tickets, and admission is free and open to the public. Kutztown University’s Department Of Speech Communication and Theatre presents the musical comedy - "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," Apr. 19 – 24 at the Rickenbach Theatre. Music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin, conceived by Rebecca Feldman, directed by KU assistant professor Guy William Molnar.

This musical comedy tells the story of a spelling contest at the fictional Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky teens and four real audience members compete to see who can capture the top prize. With three odd-ball grown-ups running the spelling bee, it’s a recipe for laughter. Nominated for six Tony Awards, the songs, dances & improvisational comedy of Spelling Bee will keep you in S-T-I-T-C-H-E-S.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

The KU men’s rugby team will host University of Delaware this Saturday at 1 p.m. in the home finale. The 1-3 Golden Bears will need a victory to have a chance at a winning season after a 24-20 loss to Navy last weekend. This Saturday’s match will be held at North Campus Field and admission is free.

The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University
hosts the annual Easter on the Farm event Saturday, Apr. 16, 10 a.m.—4 p.m. Events include an Easter Egg Hunt at 11:30 a.m. and at 2:30 p.m. for children 12 and under, egg-dying, and an egg-eating contest. Homemade soups and desserts are available for purchase from the Old Time Plow Boy’s kitchen as well as a demonstration from the Reading-Berks Guild of Craftsmen. This event is free and open to the public.

Shoofly Literary Magazine Launch - The 2011 issue of Shoofly Literary Magazine has arrived. Join us at the launch as Kutztown University students read original works of fiction, poetry, and drama published in this year’s issue. The launch will take place on Wednesday, Apr. 20, at 7 p.m. in MSU 250 (the Presidents’ Room). Copies of the magazine will be available free of charge and refreshments will be served.

Steve Allen’s “Meeting of Minds” will be on campus Friday, April 22. Come see historical characters interact onstage, portrayed by some of your favorite actors. There will be a dress rehearsal held in Schaeffer Auditorium at 1 p.m. and the main performance (including a reception with the actors) will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets for the rehearsal are available at the MSU Info Desk. “Absence is Presence: Matthew Daub’s Kempton” -- Nationally renowned watercolor artist and professor of Fine Arts, Matthew Daub will deliver an illustrated Chambliss Faculty Research Awards lecture on Monday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m. in the McFarland Student Union’s Alumni Auditorium. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend this fascinating presentation.

The title of the lecture, “Absence is Presence: Matthew Daub’s Kempton,” is taken from an essay by Carl Little on Daub’s work.

Daub has been a professor of Fine Arts at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania since 1987. His watercolor paintings and drawings have been widely exhibited for over three decades, with more than 20 one-person exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the United States including the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania, and the Evansville Museum in Indiana. Daub’s works have been included in numerous invitational exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and in 2010, the 185th Invitational Exhibition of American Art at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Friday, Apr. 15 from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium, Kutztown University students, staff, faculty and administrators are invited to the hear Jerry Pinkney, winner of the 2010 Caldecott Award and many other awards for his outstanding illustrations in children's books. Also, Pat Mora, poet and author of books for children and adults, will be presenting. Pat is the founder of El Dia de los libros, celebrated in communities around the United States. Many of her books are bilingual (Spanish and English). This event is offered at no charge to the KU community. The presenters will autograph books immediately after in MSU. Books are available for purchase at a 20% discount in the KU Bookstore.
