“Absence is Presence: Matthew Daub’s Kempton” -- Nationally renowned watercolor artist and professor of Fine Arts, Matthew Daub will deliver an illustrated Chambliss Faculty Research Awards lecture on Monday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m. in the McFarland Student Union’s Alumni Auditorium. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend this fascinating presentation.

The title of the lecture, “Absence is Presence: Matthew Daub’s Kempton,” is taken from an essay by Carl Little on Daub’s work.

Daub has been a professor of Fine Arts at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania since 1987. His watercolor paintings and drawings have been widely exhibited for over three decades, with more than 20 one-person exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the United States including the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania, and the Evansville Museum in Indiana. Daub’s works have been included in numerous invitational exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and in 2010, the 185th Invitational Exhibition of American Art at the National Academy of Design in New York City. On Friday, Kutztown University began its second year as sponsor of KU Academic All-Star Nights at the Reading Phillies. Students from regional elementary and middle schools are selected for the honor on a per-game basis by their administrations.  Prior to the game, the students get to meet select Reading Phillies players face-to-face in centerfield.  They also receive a KU lanyard and greetings from Avalanche, the Golden Bear mascot.  Sponsored by KU's Division of Advancement, upcoming Academic All-Star Nights are scheduled for April 29 and 30, and May 2, 3, 12, 24 and 25 at First Energy Stadium in Reading.

The Kutztown University Council of Trustees meeting scheduled
for Thursday, April 28 has been postponed to Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at the President’s Boardroom.

The Community Outreach Center is sponsoring a "Tennis Jam" on Thursday, Apr. 21. from 4-6 p.m. This event is designed to give a group of 5th grade students from the Reading School District a taste of college first hand. If you are energetic and like working with kids, this event is for you. No tennis skills are required, just the ability to have fun and hang out with some great kids.

The students will be arriving on our campus around 4 p.m., followed by a brief tour of our beautiful campus, and then about an hour of interactive tennis and music, located on our tennis courts by Keystone Hall. The International Student Organization Annual Banquet will be held on Saturday, Apr. 23 in MSU Multipurpose Room. Veteran Resource Centers - How They Will Impact Your Campus and Your Community will be discussed in a webinar on Tuesday, Apr. 19, from 3 - 4:30 p.m. in MSU 322. Presenters are:  Dr. John Schupp, creator and National Director of the SERV (Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran) program and Roger P. Buck, Ph.D., retired U.S. Navy Veteran. Join us as we learn how to staff it, how to get the local veteran community to help run it, and most important, how to fund it. D2L Schedule and Checklist Tools on Thursday, Apr. 21, 2 - 3 p.m. D2L incorporates several useful tools that help your students stay on task with assigned course work. Attend this workshop to learn how to incorporate the Schedule and Checklist tools in your D2L course.

Dreamweaver CS5 on Tuesday, April 26 – 10 - 11 a.m. or Friday, April 29 – 10 - 11 a.m. - Dreamweaver is Adobe’s web development tool. Attend this “Basics” workshop to learn how to create a faculty webpage using Dreamweaver. Follow-on workshops over the summer will also be offered that cover more advanced Dreamweaver functionality.

Congratulations to the KU men's tennis team for earning the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs. Kutztown will meet Mercyhurst Thursday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. in a match to be held at Bloomsburg University. 

Congratulations to the KU softball team for qualifying for the PSAC playoffs. The Golden Bears will open against Gannon on Thursday afternoon at a time and site to be determined. The site will not be known until late Tuesday evening pending the outcome of the Bloomsburg-IUP softball games.

The Kutztown University Choir conducted by Dr. Dennis Williams will present a performance of Beethoven's Mass in C Major with full orchestra and chorus, and featuring soloists who are Voice Major alumni, graduates with a KU Music degree:  soprano Kathryn Bonilla, alto Jen Jaynes, and tenor Steven Kell. The bass solo will be sung by Edward Bara, instructor of music at Muhlenberg College. There are no tickets, and admission is free and open to the public. Kutztown University’s Department Of Speech Communication and Theatre presents the musical comedy - "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," Apr. 19 – 24 at the Rickenbach Theatre. Music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin, conceived by Rebecca Feldman, directed by KU assistant professor Guy William Molnar.

This musical comedy tells the story of a spelling contest at the fictional Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky teens and four real audience members compete to see who can capture the top prize. With three odd-ball grown-ups running the spelling bee, it’s a recipe for laughter. Nominated for six Tony Awards, the songs, dances & improvisational comedy of Spelling Bee will keep you in S-T-I-T-C-H-E-S.

Shoofly Literary Magazine Launch
- The 2011 issue of Shoofly Literary Magazine has arrived. Join us at the launch as Kutztown University students read original works of fiction, poetry, and drama published in this year’s issue. The launch will take place on Wednesday, Apr. 20, at 7 p.m. in MSU 250 (the Presidents’ Room). Copies of the magazine will be available free of charge and refreshments will be served.

Steve Allen’s “Meeting of Minds” will be on campus Friday, April 22. Come see historical characters interact onstage, portrayed by some of your favorite actors. There will be a dress rehearsal held in Schaeffer Auditorium at 1 p.m. and the main performance (including a reception with the actors) will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets for the rehearsal are available at the MSU Info Desk.
