Meet Marilyn Falcone - from Facilities. Her story is below.

The Daily Brief

Thursday, April 21, 2011

KU PRIDE

Very few people on campus have ever seen Marilyn Falcone. As the Facilities Department’s custodial supervisor for the third shift, she rarely is on campus during the day. And when her job starts at 11 p.m., Marilyn is busy throughout the night working with a team of custodians who are in charge of cleaning all the classrooms and administrative buildings during the small hours of the morning.

Unlike the first and second shift custodial teams in classroom and administrative buildings, the nighttime facilities crew typically works in big empty buildings.

“I like working at night, because you are rarely interrupted,” she said. “And the job is very diversified. Not only am I in charge of personnel, but I also do training on new products and techniques in addition to traveling across campus to help individual crews with the larger projects.”

After her job is done on campus, Marilyn puts her KU degrees in elementary and art education to work as a substitute teacher for the Kutztown Area School District – talk about a busy schedule!

Marilyn graduated from KU (then Kutztown State College) in 1978 with a B.S. in Art Education and began working in facilities that year. In 1990, she earned her elementary education teacher certification from KU. As a K-12 substitute, she teaches a variety of subjects from special education to art for elementary kids, which she said is sometimes a messy job. Not that Marilyn is new to cleaning up messes.

“It all started at the end of the fall semester in my junior year,” she said. “I remember running late for my art class with Dr. Thomas Schantz (Department of Art Education & Crafts emeritus) and opening up what I thought was a bag with my project in it. Out fell my dirty laundry. Both Dr. Schantz and I laughed!”

Announcements

STRATTON LOT TO HAVE LIMITED ACCESS ON April 27; ENTERPRISE RENTAL CARS TO BE RELOCATED FOR THE DAY -

As a part of KU’s commitment to the community, we will be hosting the Berks County Special Olympics on Wednesday, April 27. The F-1 parking Lot (behind Stratton Administration Center) and the F-4 Lot (between University Field and the old heating plant) will have limited access in an effort to accommodate the buses transporting the Special Olympics participants to University Field. Faculty and staff who normally park in F-1 or F-4 will have the option of parking in A-2 (near Beekey Education Building) and riding the shuttle to Stratton, or parking in any other faculty/staff space and walking. The shuttle stop at lot A-2 will be clearly marked along College Boulevard. The first shuttle loop begins at 7 a.m. The shuttle will also run in the afternoon from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. to return employees to the A-2 lot. The parking spots in F-1 closest to the Stratton Building (currently handicapped and 30-minute parking) will be reserved for KU employee handicapped parking and for daily business purposes only.

In addition all Enterprise rental cars scheduled for Wednesday (4/27) pick-up will be relocated and can be picked up at the north campus location (Academic Forum).  If you are dropping off cars on Tuesday (4/26), you may still drop them off at the south campus location (parking lot F-4).  Any cars being returned on Wednesday (4/27) before 4:00pm should be dropped off at the north campus location – any cars being dropped off after 4:00pm can be returned to the south campus location.

We ask that all employees please be aware of the event date and plan accordingly.   We truly appreciate your cooperation in helping our university support such a worthy cause.   Any questions feel free to contact my office.  Thanks again for your support.

On behalf of the Residence Hall Association and Housing & Residential Services, I would like to thank the university community for supporting the 33rd annual Bearfest celebration!  The week of events would not have run so smoothly if it weren’t for the hard working and dedicated Facilities staff and our Custodians who make these type of student activities possible by providing excellent and adaptable service, especially in accommodating a last minute change in venue due to weather.  Additionally, the Race against Racism was able to donate over $2,000 to the Olivet Boys & Girls Club of Reading, and was a big success thanks in large part to the support of Recreational Services staff and Public Safety.
