ANNOUNCEMENTS

Drop by Beekey and you’ll find Dr. John McCarthy hard at work as KU’s new associate dean for the College of Education.  McCarthy took over for Dr. Fred McCoy in late May.

In his role as associate dean, Dr. McCarthy is responsible for providing leadership around the processes of continuing accreditation for the College of Education with state and national organizations such as the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Further, Dr. McCarthy will oversee assessment planning for the College of Education, supervision of the Clinical Experience and Outreach Office, as well as supervision of graduate assistants in the College of Education, and responding to student issues. He will assist the Dean with overall planning, coordinating and evaluating academic programs, curricula and services for the university.

Prior to joining KU, McCarthy served as assistant dean for accreditation and assessment at the State University of New York at Oswego, where he coordinated preparations for National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and was a key participant in the university’s Middle States accreditation preparations.

Before SUNY-Oswego, McCarthy served as the director for the Office of Program Evaluation and Assessment at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of the New York Institute of Technology, where he was lead author and developer of an institutional (medical college) Longitudinal Student Learning Outcome Assessment Plan.

“Dr. McCarthy brings a wealth of experience in accreditation and compliance, assessment, curriculum development, strategic planning. We’re very pleased he could join us,” said Dr. Darrell Garber, dean of the College of Education.

McCarthy holds a doctorate in Leadership in Higher Education with certification in Program Evaluation from the University of Rochester’s Margaret Warner Graduate School for Education. He earned his Master of Science degree in Special Education and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mansfield University. He lives in Reading, Pa.
