KU PRIDE

Meet Valerie Reidout - It seems that everybody knows Valerie Reidout! She studied Art Education at KU in the early 1980s, was a member of the cheerleading team and has worked in the Admissions Office for more than 25 years.

During her junior and senior years, she stayed with head football coach George Baldwin and his family, who recruited her as a campus tour guide. “As everyone knows, coaches bring recruits to campus to meet with them about the sports program. Coach Baldwin, or dad as I called him, asked me to greet students and their families,” she said.

Valerie found her niche. When she graduated in December 1983, art professor Tom Schantz told her about an opening in admissions and her career took off.

“I also was coaching our cheerleading squad at the time,” she said. “I enjoyed working with the students and helped build the team by adding male cheerleaders.”

In 1996, she earned her M.Ed. in Student Affairs in Higher Education from KU. Today she assists prospective students with admissions policies, evaluates applications, hosts events on campus, and attends   off-campus recruitment fairs.

A high-profile job, the Admissions Office is the first stop for information on undergraduate and graduate programs at KU. The office hosts more than 11,000 visitors per year who come to Kutztown for campus tours, fall open house programs and spring visitation days for accepted students.

It may come as no surprise to say that Valerie is fashion-conscious – after all, she was one of the very first models for KU Student Bookstore advertisements!

“Most people know that I have a love of jewelry, but few may realize that I also make jewelry using natural gem stones and sterling silver,” she said.
