ANNOUNCEMENTS

Area fire companies are invited to train on campus throughout the year to expand their knowledge of our facilities and to enhance student safety, said Stephen Helms, director of Environmental, Health and Safety. Last week, the Kutztown Fire Company joined with Topton firefighters for a practice exercise at KU’s University Place residence hall. Using a smoke generator to add a bit of realism, the firefighters refined the logistics of an emergency call in the large resident living facility by stretching hose lines, raising ladders, conducting search exercises and ventilating the smoke.

Helms, who is a volunteer firefighter with the Kutztown company and state fire training instructor, said the practice run provides KU’s neighboring first responders the opportunity to familiarize with the campus environment and complexities associated with the various buildings and their functions.

“In addition to training last Thursday evening at University Place, Kutztown firefighters were on campus in May to practice using their aerial-ladder truck at Dixon Hall, one of the tallest buildings in the area,” Helms said.

He noted that regional firefighters are all volunteers, neighbors of the campus, and dedicated to their job, giving hours of their time for training to ensure the best possible service in the event of an emergency.

“The Kutztown and Topton fire companies are both highly modernized firefighting organizations. With their commitment to continual training and close ties with the university, they are our community partners in safety,” Helms said.
