KU PRIDE

Meet Kenneth Long

As Assistant Vice President for Administration and Finance, Kenneth Long is responsible for administering the university’s financial operations, safeguarding assets and ensuring that university resources are properly utilized under the direction of the Vice President for Administration and Finance, Gerald Silberman.

Ken, as he likes to be called, oversees and provides leadership to all financial services functions including: accounting, accounts payable, bursar, budget and purchasing. He also serves as a university contracting officer and as an advisor to the executive director of Kutztown University Student Services Inc. Additionally, he provides financial analysis and recommendations for new and existing academic and administrative programs and capital projects.

One might assume that Ken would take a break from all this number crunching on his days off. And most of the time he is a dedicated father of three daughters. But when election time rolls around, he can’t resist dusting off his undergraduate degrees in mathematics and political science to follow the candidates.

“I am an election night junky,” he confesses. “I like to stay up into the late evening and early morning to monitor the polls. Using maps, a computer and prior year election results, I attempt to project the election outcomes before the media outlets release their results.”

Prior to joining the Administration and Finance team at KU, Ken was part of the same division at the University of Toledo (UT) serving as Director of Budgeting, interim CFO of the Physician Group and as Associate Vice President.   Before UT, he worked for DeVry University.  In his 18 years at DeVry, Ken held several positions in the Finance Division including five years as the New Jersey campus’ chief fiscal and administrative officer.

He and his wife Evelyn moved to the area in 2008 after living in northwest Ohio for several years. With close relatives throughout the East Coast, Ken says the Lehigh Valley is an ideal location to raise his family.

“And now that we are settled into a new home, the kids and my wife are looking forward to going to some of the local summer festivals and outdoor events.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Cost per copy program - Beginning with the 2012 fiscal year, there will be internal accounting changes associated with the cost per copy program with Edwards Business Systems. This will streamline our current process, as departments will no longer be required to enter blanket purchase orders to Edwards for their in-house department copies. Funds will now be reserved for this service in SAP by the Budget Office. Much like a purchase order, these funds will be encumbered for Edwards copy service only, and the total amount reserved will be based upon a department’s 2010/2011 usage. If you have any questions, you may contact Anise Freeman, Purchasing, (x3-4774) or Matt Delaney, Budget Office (x3-4817).

The Wiesenberger Alumni Center -
This unusual Arts and Crafts style residence, virtually unique in Berks County, was constructed circa 1900 with Spanish Revival style gables, a tile roof, stucco over brick construction, bracketed cornice, interesting window and dormer arrangements with some diamond panes, and a side portico.

The interior features many Arts and Crafts appointments, including natural woodwork, encaustic tiles, fancy fireplaces and surrounds, a stately staircase, beveled glass, a hand-painted frieze, and unusual period hardware.

The house was built by Walter Dietrich for his nephew, Conrad Gehring, a Swiss immigrant who came to Kutztown in 1871 to edit the Kutztown Journal, forerunner of the Patriot. It was later sold to Henry W. Sharadin, the well-known art professor at the college whose magnificent murals still adorn the interior walls of the house. Although the famed peacock mural that graced the dining room has been removed, it has been preserved and now hangs in the office of the Dean of the School of Art in the Sharadin Art Building, his namesake.
Arthur and Isabel Wiesenberger, "lifelong friends of Kutztown," purchased this house in 1986 and donated it to the KU Foundation to use as an alumni center "to strengthen the bonds which unite undergraduates and alumni alike to the university."
