Announcements

KU's Peter Loukas knows the campus inside and out. As a security officer who supplements the police force, he has spent nights patrolling the campus, walking through the buildings with a flashlight and checking doors that many people probably have never noticed.

For more than 20 years, Loukas has been on duty. Often behind the wheel of a cruiser, Loukas keeps a watchful on KU.

Today, he assists with supervising the parking enforcement officers and crossing guards during the day shift – a position that is responsible for the smooth operation of activities on both the north and south campus. Loukas said these security officers are in some of the most visible locations on campus.

“Our people brave the cold, rain and sleet to do their job,” he noted. “In addition to parking enforcement, our officers conduct daytime security checks of the buildings and serve as an extra set of eyes for KU Public Safety and Police Services Department. Our crossing guards work hard to keep the students safe while making sure that the traffic runs smoothly.”

This team provides many additional services that include assisting with medical transports to unlocking doors and providing a cheerful “you’re welcome” to students who thank them for their help.

Few may know it, but Loukas also is an avid videographer. He shot and edited the campus fire prevention video and three other public safety productions used by his department.

Whether he is behind the camera or on patrol, Peter Loukas is one of the many individuals working everyday to make KU safe and secure.

“The best part of my job is the people,” he said. “I get to meet students, faculty and staff. It is all part of the university experience – and I see us as one large family.”

The Kutztown University Sunshine Players, one of the campus’ longest-running student organizations, invite the Kutztown community to enjoy Sally Snoo and the Bird From Kaloo on March 26 and 27 in the Learning Center’s Rickenbach Theatre.

The original short children’s play follows the adventure of Sally, a young girl who is searching for a famous six-foot-tall bird from Kaloo to add to her collection of exotic animals. In this tongue-twisting, Dr. Seuss-themed production, Sally Snoo emphasizes the values of friendship and animal rights, while often including audience participation and even a sing-along. The play was written by KU alum Trystin S. Bailey, who is currently producing original works in New York City.

To help celebrate Dr. Seuss month and the joy of reading, the Sunshine Players are teaming up with KU’s Community Outreach Center and America Reads to host “Dr. Seuss on the Loose!,” a morning filled with prizes, games, food, and crafts, a free book for every child, and even a visit from a very special cat. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the McFarland Student Union Building, Room 281, just before the first performance of Sally Snoo at 12:45 p.m. Admission is free for all events.

The Sunshine Players will be accepting donations of new and used children’s books at all performances to donate to a local children’s charity. Sally Snoo and the Bird From Kaloo will be performed on Saturday, March 26 at 12:45 and 6 p.m. and Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m. For more information or to reserve a seat, please contact Eva at ewask809@live.kutztown.edu.
