Tomorrow, Mar. 22, Kutztown's Sigma Omicron chapter of Delta Phi Alpha (National German Honor Society) will host a translation seminar and workshop. So many of our new majors (and even our upperclass majors and minors) have expressed an interest in learning more about translation, both the industry and practice. The Sigma Omicron chapter received an incentive grant from Delta Phi Alpha to offer this event.

Pennsylvania Coal Mining Songs and Stories - Tuesday, Mar. 22, 7:30 p.m., at St. John's United Church of Christ - Free Event.
KU Presents! is partnering with the Kutztown Folk Music Society and the Mountain Folk show to host a special free 1-hour event with local folk musician Jay Smar who will talk about the history of coal mining and folk music, and perform a mixture of original and documented coal mining songs of Northeastern Pennsylvania where his grandfather was a coal miner for 54 years in the town of Coaldale. He will also have on hand recordings and coal books and historical chronicles. St. John's United Church of Christ, 257 W. Walnut St., Kutztown. And remember, this Thursday night at Schaeffer Auditorium is Grammy-award winning singer, Kathy Mattea.

We are looking for qualified female students to attend the PASSHE Leadership Institute for Undergraduate Women. The Institute creates an experience that empowers women as leaders, creativity, and respect for diversity; helps students develop campus projects to practice skills learned at the institute under the direction of a mentor on their campus, and connects women with other women who are committed to social change.

Where: The McKeever Environmental Learning Center in Sandy Lake, Pa.

New Streaming Videos via Rohrbach - Over 400 new educational films have been added to the Library's subscription to Films on Demand in February and March. These include additions to the Humanities, Social Science, Business, Science, and Health collections. STUDENT ACTIVITIES


KU Rugby drops heartbreaker to Penn State - A last-minute drop goal saw the Penn State rugby team squeak by KU, 30-29, in the opening College Premier Match for both teams. Kutztown opened up a 14-3 lead in the first half thanks to an early try from Tim Acker and then a late try from wing Gareth Lourens. But Penn State roared back with two tries from Ryan Goulding. 

Kutztown replied with a try by Caleb Tracey to make it 24-20, but Penn State replied to lead 27-24. Ruan Scheepers scored for Kutztown to put the Golden Bears ahead 29-27 with time winding down. Penn State pressured again and were right on the KU goal line. Playing advantage for a penalty, PSU lined up the drop goal, and Baker slotted it over for the win. Kutztown will try to get back on track against Army this Saturday at 1 p.m. at KU’s North Campus Field.

Social Dialogue: Race & Gender - Multicultural Center hosts KU assistant professor of English, Dr. Ellesia Blaque as she discusses, “Social Dialogue: Race & Gender,” Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 11 a.m., in the Multicultural Center Unity Room. Dr. Blaque will discuss how African American women are sometimes seen as abject, unattractive, oversexed and promiscuous, and unmarried mothers. By examining the illogical rationale of these ideas and exploring how race and gender intertwine, Dr. Blaque will garner understanding as a step to dismantle these identities.

Dr. Lawrence M. Stratton Scholarship 2011-2012 applications are now available
in the Financial Aid Office. Criteria:
    •Must earn 30 or more credits by the end of spring 2011;
    •Must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50
    •Must demonstrate participation and leadership in KU campus activities.
Applications need to be returned to the Financial Aid Office no later than Apr. 15.

Please encourage eligible students to apply for the APSCUF-KU Scholarship. The top candidates will be selected for interviews. Of those interviewed, five will be awarded $500 scholarships and the remaining interviewees will receive $100 awards. The eligibility criteria are as follows.
     •Financial need.
    •A minimum 3.0 GPA.
    •Completion of at least 24 hours of course work, including at least 12 hours of course work at KU at time of application.
    •Returning to campus in Fall 2011 as a full-time student.
    •Previous recipients are ineligible.

A staging area for machinery and supplies will be confined to the grassy area directly behind the building. No changes to egress or parking will be required.
