Beginning tonight at 9 p.m. through tomorrow, Mar. 9, at noon, the university’s Web servers will be undergoing routine maintenance. During this time, we ask all users to refrain from making any changes to university websites. Any changes made during this maintenance window will be lost. We do not expect any websites to be down during this time period. Please note that websites affected include the main university website (www), faculty, staff, departmental websites; and some smaller websites hosted on the main university Web server. Services such as Profs Online and Desire2Learn are not affected by this maintenance. If you have any questions, please contact the Information Technology Help Center.

The next University Curriculum Committee (UCC) meeting will be held on Mar. 24. The deadline for submission of all proposals for this meeting is 12 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, Mar. 10. Please submit new proposals prior to this deadline to the UCC secretary, Bethany French, in the Provost’s Office, 309 Stratton Admin. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. French at x3-1312.

KU Senate Governance Committee willingness-to-serve opens Monday Mar. 14. More than 80 positions are available on 24 senate governance committees. Specific committee vacancies, descriptions, and the nominations procedure will be posted and will run in Profs Online. This is a (user-friendly) self or colleague nomination process unrestricted by years of service. Committee terms are usually two or three years. Nominations close Monday, Apr. 4, 11:59 p.m. Appointments are made by the Committee on Committees and approved by Senate in late April. Service begins Aug. 29, 2011.

Reminder: Door Access System Upgrade today -
Facilities is conducting a software upgrade on the SMS Door Security System today. It is expected that this upgrade will take a full business day to complete. Campus authorizing officials have been provided with information outlining the impact of the software upgrade. Authorizing officials will be notified via email when the upgrade process begins and when the upgrade process has been completed. For campus users of door access/door readers:  All door readers will continue to function normally during the upgrade process. If you experience any issues with door access during the scheduled system upgrade, please contact the Work Control Center at x3-1594. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we accomplish this necessary upgrade.

Dr. Ericsson, Conradi Eminent Scholar and professor of Psychology at Florida State University, is widely recognized as one of the world's leading theoretical and experimental researchers on expertise. He has demonstrated through his research that building top expertise is more than anything else a matter of long and repeated deliberate practice. Please join us for discussions with Dr. K. Anders Ericsson on issues that can have a far reaching impact on how we teach and learn at KU. We will discuss with Dr. Ericsson how to best employ his research to improve instruction at KU and what his research means to our students and their futures.

Java City in the Bear’s Den will be open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. and will resume normal hours on Monday, Mar. 14.

Update:  Java City in the Bear’s Den will also be open on Wednesday, Mar. 9, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in addition to the Cub Café to accommodate the Science Olympiad visitors.

All other locations will be closed during Spring Break and will resume normal hours on Monday, Mar. 14.

A test of the campus Mass Notification System will be conducted on Thursday, Mar. 10, at 10 a.m. This test will affect those buildings with voice-communication fire alarm systems only. KU Presents! director Andy Cassano hosts two remaining public open houses to talk more about renovations to the Nathan C. Schaeffer Auditorium at Kutztown University. The dates are Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m. Each open house will be held in Schaeffer Auditorium. The event is open to the all.  

The Schaeffer Auditorium is scheduled for an 18-month long renovation and remodeling beginning in January 2012. This is the first major work on the auditorium since it opened in 1938. At each open house, Cassano will be sharing project details, showing renderings and floor plans, as well as taking people on a backstage tour of the facility. 



The Student Union Art Gallery is currently showing "Night" featuring photography by Allison Bupp. The exhibition will be on display from Friday, Mar. 4 until Thursday, Mar. 24. There is a catered opening reception scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 15 from 7 - 8 p.m.

A Spring Break of Our Own – While the students are away enjoying their time off, treat yourself to a little taste of spring.  The Dixon Creamery will be open tomorrow, Mar. 9, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. with special deals for everyone. Regular size soft serve ice cream will be one dollar, and hard ice cream will be a dollar per scoop.

AFSCME Local 2234: Members meet the 3rd Monday of every month. Construction Update: There will be a brief shut-down of the heating system in the deFrancesco Building tomorrow, Mar. 9 starting at 7-11 a.m. in support of the chiller replacement project. While the new connections are being made, selected areas may experience slight reductions in heating levels.
