Two Kutztown University students, Doreen Smeck and Geert Ruelens, will compete for the top prize of $3,000 starting with an informal concert at 9 a.m. and culminating in a final performance at 7 p.m. in the Georgian Room of Old Main. Both events are free and open to the public. A reception is to follow immediately after the concert.
Dr. Ina Grapenthin of the KU Department of Music is participating as a judge in the blind competition.
The 9 a.m. performance is a 20-minute program of the contestants’ choosing, played for the judges and the public. The judges will choose the top three performers after the 7 p.m. concert, where the audience will be invited to vote for the candidate of their choice by submitting a $5 ballot.
The top three performers will receive cash awards from Rodgers Instruments for $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 respectively. Smeck and Ruelens are also the youngest participants in the competition.
Prior to the final round, contestants participated in regional rounds in Los Angeles and Baltimore.
