KU PRIDE

This week, the university community bids a fond farewell to William Mioskie, Director of Public Safety & Police Services. At the end of the day on Friday, May 6, he will turn over his badge to Deputy Chief John Dillon, who has been appointed to serve as Acting Chief of Public Safety and Police Services, effective May 7.

Through 32 years of service as patrol officer, supervisor, and criminal investigator and for 26 years as Chief of Police, Mioskie maintained a careful vigilance over the safety of the campus. Perhaps there is no better person to tell the story than Chief Mioskie:

“I have only had one full-time employment in my life, and that has been with Kutztown University. In 1979, I graduated from the police academy and took an oath of office to serve and protect our community and uphold the constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I have taken this oath seriously throughout my career and prayed each day that I would deploy my powers and authority to the best of my ability.

“When I first started working on campus, we patrolled in used sedans and officers’ wore casual clothing with trench coats and clip on ties. Today we have SUVs/Mobile Command Posts equipped with state-of-the-art emergency response equipment, Segways and full-dress uniforms with all the tools of the trade – and for me, no more clip-on ties – it is now zipper ties! My how things have changed!

“When I first started at KU, we did our reports on a typewriter and placed them in a file cabinet. Today we have computers with gigabytes of storage. Well at least we don’t have to spread things all over the floor looking for something. Instead, we can sit in comfort in our chairs using a thing called a mouse to search for our documents.

“When I first started, we had rotary dial telephones. Today we have push-button voicemail, hands-free, transfer, ring again, call forwarding, and conferencing phones. And can you believe it?  We have these little items called cell phones with Bluetooth. The only blue tooth I remembered is when I ate blueberry pie!  And, oh yeah, email, which allows 24-hour accessibility. My how things have changed!

“For more than three decades, I have been honored to serve the university and am very thankful to have the privilege of meeting and working with many wonderful people. The kind words, great stories, and cherished gifts will stay in my memory forever. I have been very blessed throughout my career, as well as having been blessed with my great daughter, Kira, and my loving partner, Camille Bartlett, who both have helped me with this difficult decision as I transition into this next phase of my life. (Camille-it’s now time to enjoy our cottage, we have many beautiful years ahead of us! I also want to thank all of you who put together such a wonderful retirement week of festivities.)

“In addition, the award dedicated in my name is a special tribute – thank you.  (The William Mioskie Tower Award, presented by Housing & Residential Services, will honor a student whose awareness and action has contributed to the overall safety of the university.)

“My philosophy has always been that of the traditional law enforcement officer – to serve and protect. I embraced this philosophy in my heart as I proudly carried and displayed my badge of authority, a symbol of respect and service to the community, in discharge of my duties. To my public safety and police services team – thank you for all you have done over the years; keep safe. It is now time to turn over my badge. From my heart, I wish you all the best. It has been a privilege and honor to serve Kutztown University.

“For the future – as many people know, I’m a Disney fanatic. Now that my career is over what am I going to do? I’m going to Disney World!”

ACADEMICS

The following DVDS were added to the media library and are available in the AV Center:

Union Maids (DVD 5148) - Sitdowns, scabs, goon squads, unemployment, hunger marches, red baiting and finally the energetic birth of the CIO – the 1930s were a landmark period for the American labor movement. Union Maids is the story of three women who lived the history and make it come alive today.

Inside Job (DVD 5149) - Inside Job, the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, Inside Job traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia.

The following CFile has been added to the media library and is available in the AV Center:

Petroleum Geology eTextbook (CFile 1193) - This electronic textbook not only provides the reader with a useful list of references, but also includes a small interlinked ‘library’ of previously published journal articles, book chapters, and contributions by professionals in the industry. The included video clips both provide insight by specialists in their respective fields of expertise, and aid the learning process through the animation of a technique or phenomenon. Whereas the expression, “A picture tells a thousand words, “remains true, so today a video clip (which is nothing more than a stream of moving pictures) can sometimes be even more effective.

ATHLETICS

In KU women's lacrosse, sophomore midfielder Randy Vite and junior forward Rachel Mehaffey were named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) team released Wednesday.  Vite was named to the second team and Mehaffey was selected to the third team. This is Vite’s first career selection to the All-PSAC team. Mehaffey is on the all-conference team for the third consecutive season after previously being honored on the East second team twice. Together, they helped the Golden Bears win five games and increase their win total from 2010.

Reimer, McQuade and Deeter honored by the LVAIAW -
Three of Kutztown University’s terrific senior student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding athletic accomplishments Tuesday afternoon at the annual Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women luncheon at Starter’s Pub.

Chelsea Deeter (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) for soccer and Cristina Reimer (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) for cross-country, were honored as the most outstanding players in their respective sports. Meanwhile, women’s basketball record holder Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) was recognized for being Kutztown’s most outstanding senior female athlete.

All three young women have set standards that will be hard to match. While they have re-wrote their respective sports record books, the quality that makes all three special is their humble attitudes.
