Activating your D2L courses each semester
- Please remember that courses in Desire2Learn are created as "inactive". This simply means you will be able to have access to your D2L learning space sooner, since your students will not have access to your course until you choose to make your course status "active". Previous courses will be unaffected, if you have already closed a past course it will not be opened. Instructions are available within the D2L announcement. Please contact D2Ladmin@kutztown.edu with any questions.

In addition to being the official start of summer programming, the week of May 23 will also feature several special programs, namely on Wednesday, May 25, where from 9:30 to 11 a.m., KUR will be broadcasting live from the kindergarten class at St. Ambrose Elementary School in Schuylkill Haven, about 40 minutes north of Kutztown. It's all a part of KUR's mission to continue as a solid mainstay in the at-large community and to serve the youth of the area with a fun and informative lesson in radio broadcasting. Tune in for this special broadcast.

Later on that same day, at 11 a.m., it's the summer's return of "The Show" with Nick Petrillo, KUR's exclusive sports/talk radio program.

Then at 2:45 p.m. it's the summer's re-debut of "The Diversity Rest Stop Radio Program," this week sitting down with Eva Di Orio, proprietress of the Lehigh Valley's newest art gallery, "The Soft Machine Gallery."

This non-stop amazing Wednesday of programming wraps up from 3 to 5 p.m. with the long-awaited return of Kutztown University General Accounting Manager "Groovy" Greg Dottor with his new summer show the "Heart of Rock and Soul."

All this in addition to the rest of the week's amazing programming which can be found by clicking on our website http://kur.kutztown.edu/

ACADEMICS

The following DVDS were added to the media library and are available in the AV Center:

Child Therapy with the Experts Series:
Adolescent Family Therapy (DVD 5182) Parents and therapists often fall into the same traps with teenagers:  getting into power struggles, coming across as phony, and not setting limits.  Janet Sasson Edgette shows us how to be candid and real with adolescents rather than fighting for control or approval.

Viva Cuba (DVD 5181) Malu  is from an upper-class family and her single mother does not want her to play with Jorgito, as she thinks his background is coarse and commonplace.  Jorgito’s mother, a poor socialist proud of her family’s social standing, places similar restrictions on her son.  What neither woman recognizes is the immense strength of the bond between Malu and Jorgito.  When the children learn that Malu’s mother is planning to leave Cuba, they decide to run away and travel to the other side of the island to find Malu’s father and persuade him against signing the forms that would allow it.

As if Sharon Young doesn’t have enough to juggle at work as the coordinator of Client Services in the Information Technology Help Center, she goes home at night and works out with a hula hoop!

"Instead of weights, it’s a five-pound adult hula hoop, unlike the normal ones kids use. It makes for a fun workout!” she said.

Speaking of “old school” fun, Sharon has been working with university’s computers for more than 21 years. She began taking classes in 1986 at the dawn of desktop computers, and started working fulltime in IT in 1990.

“In the late 1980s, I was continuing my studies for a B.S. in Computer Science and working as a custodian in deFrancesco when I received a letter asking if any computer science majors would like to work in the IT Help Center as a student worker.  I took the job, finished my degree in 1994, and have been answering computer-related questions ever since.”

A fast-paced industry, computer technology has come a long way since the introduction of desk-top computers, smart classrooms, Internet service and email.

“Back in the 1980s, there were no Windows or Mac computers at KU – only ‘dumb’ terminals,” Sharon said. “Students did their programming in the computer room in the Stratton Administration Center. Printouts came out at the other end of the hall on 11 by 17 inch pin-fed banner paper that we unfolded down the hallway on the floor to look at our programs.”

Today, Sharon manages a modern IT help center, resolving and fielding calls related to hardware, software and network issues, in addition to providing classroom training.

“It’s really neat working where you graduated, because I don’t really feel like I have aged, but then I see the students – and they seem to get younger and younger each year,” Sharon said. “I enjoy working with our student workers, especially when they first start. There is a molding/training process going on as they get real-life experience in customer service. When I started at the Help Center as a student, I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life, but I loved solving puzzles and helping people. As it turned out, that is exactly what I do every day in the IT Help Center.”

The IT Help Center has moved!
The Information Technology Help Center has moved to Stratton 201.  Please visit us in our new location!

The University Storeroom will be conducting our annual inventory June 6 - 9. During this time, the storeroom will be unable to make campus deliveries. We will resume our regular delivery schedule on June 10. While the storeroom is conducting inventory, the SAP System will not allow users to process material reservations online. The storeroom will begin running the necessary transactions in preparation for inventory at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 3.

It is imperative that campus users refrain from attempting to use the material reservation transaction codes during this time. The system will resume accepting material reservation transactions beginning on Friday, June 10. Please remember that users should NOT attempt to input material reservations during this time, the transaction will not only be rejected, but it will also have an impact on the storeroom inventory process. If you have any questions, concerns, or emergency needs during this time, please contact Tim Good, storeroom supervisor at x3-4139 or via email at: good@kutztown.edu

Website assistance requests - Please be advised that the University Relations web team is in the midst of redesigning the university’s website. The university will have a new website in the coming school year, so please consider this when deciding on beginning any website projects for your areas. Because of our project, we cannot guarantee that we’ll be able to assist you with day-to-day maintenance of the existing websites. We will accommodate requests as time permits, however, we need to ask for at least four weeks notice so that we can plan and implement changes properly. Thank you for your understanding.
