Memorial Day was first celebrated in Waterloo, NY, in 1866, in honor of those who died in the Civil War. Memorial Day
is also known as Decoration Day because of the tradition of decorating the graves of those who died in battle.
Have a safe weekend!

Special programming, Memorial Day weekend and the week of May 30 - Tune in for a special holiday broadcast of Free Speech Radio News (FSRN) on May 29-31 at 10:30 a.m.

“This Memorial Day FSRN re-visits 'In Memorium,' a documentary on the history of Hawaii that is little known by most people in the United States. Located 2,500 miles west of the California coast, Hawaii became known as the 50th state in 1959. Hawaii is also home to the largest U.S. military command center and to massive tourism and real estate development industries. But native Hawaiians are largely excluded from the material benefits enjoyed by the industries that have taken over huge swaths of the island chain. It's a situation that didn't happen overnight ... but it's a history that isn't often taught in American classrooms."

On Tuesday, May 30, it's Latino music, news, and commentary, 5-6 p.m. with "Notas Latinas."

At 2:45 p.m., on Wednesday, it's "The Diversity Rest Stop Radio Program," this week sitting down with Bethlehem-based alternative musical artist Dennis Christman to discuss his new album and endeavors.

Later in the week, don't forget to check out our weekly broadcast of "Fifty One Percent," a women's issues talk show Fridays at 5 p.m. and "This Way Out," a gay/lesbian talk show Fridays at 5:30 p.m. All this in addition to the rest of the week's amazing programming which can be found by clicking on our "Schedule" link at FSRN.org website.

In Case You Missed It:
(Announcements and other information that have previously appeared in the Daily Brief.)

After a race during her sophomore year in high school, Keri Brown's track coach at the time, Rich Watson said to her: “Keri, you're like the bomb! You're going to be something special!”

“I had amazing coaches in high school: Karen O'Neil, Fran Siedlecki, and Rich Watson,” Brown said. “They always believed in me and told me that the sky was the limit for me and that I had talent.”

Fast forward seven years later and Watson's prophecy has come true. Brown is a special person concluding a fantastic collegiate career by competing in her second consecutive NCAA Division II Track and Field women's national championship meet at California State University-Stanislaus' Al Brenda Track Complex in Turlock (Calif.). Brown will compete in the 1,500-meter race on Thursday, May 26 at 8:40 p.m. See the whole story here: http://kubears.com/news/2011/5/24/WTRACK_0524114514.aspx

The emerald ash borer is an insect that arrived
in the Midwest about ten years ago.
It has destroyed millions of ash trees beginning in Michigan and radiating out. It was discovered in western PA a couple of years ago and has been moving east. Discoveries were made in Juniata and Centre Counties last year. DCNR puts up insect traps in various locations in an attempt to monitor the spread of the insect. They have located a trap near the Grim building. It is a purple triangular shaped object and is placed about 12’ off the ground in an ash tree. It will remain in place through the summer. There are no pesticides in the trap. The trap has an adhesive to capture the insects which are drawn to the color and a pheromone placed in the trap. The University will be advised of the results at the end of the study.
