Communication Design Professor Kevin McCloskey pauses for a photo while on a study tour in Mexico. See his story below.

KU PRIDE

Kevin McCloskey has been an art professor at KU for 22 years, teaching illustration and the history of graphic design.

But before starting his career as a professor, McCloskey had quite the adventure. Originally from Elizabeth, New Jersey, McCloskey enrolled at Ohio State University to study fine arts. While there, he took some time off and went around the world. Among other places, he stopped to visit Vietnam and Cambodia as the war there was winding down.

In 1975, he was working in a Plum Rose Ham factory in New Jersey. One day, McCloskey mentioned to a co-worker that he was saving up to go to Mexico. His co-worker told him to go to his house in Guatemala and gave him the keys. He drove a Toyota Corolla from New Jersey to the “lost city” of Tikal in Guatemala, where he met his co-worker’s father and stayed for a period of time. “It was like a tropical paradise,” says McCloskey.

McCloskey later went on to get his degrees from the School for Visual Arts in New York City. Since then, he has been enjoying life as a professor. He also still makes time for adventures. This past summer he participated in a five-week study tour of the Maya World sponsored by NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) and CCHA (Community College Humanities Association). He visits Mexico annually, noting that he is fascinated by third world countries with a rich arts culture. “I like the concept of people waking up every day and making art,” he says with a smile.
