KU Golden Bear receiver Josh Smith nominated for receiver performance of the year! Vote today!
Voting Open Now Until Nov. 13 at www.facebook.com/allstarfootball

2011 All-Star Performances of the Year Announced on ESPN2 Super Bowl Weekend - Kutztown’s senior receiver Josh Smith is nominated for the Receiver Performance of the Year, Intersport announced. The Receiver Performance of the Year is part of a four-month competition that lets fans determine which individual performances reign supreme during the 2011 college football season. The winners will be revealed during the two hour All-Star Football Challenge special airing at 7 p.m. ET Feb. 3 on ESPN2. In addition to recognizing the season’s top performances, the All-Star Football Challenge will feature college football’s biggest stars in a live skills challenge. In the 13 year history of the event, 41 first-round NFL draft picks have participated in the All-Star Football Challenge.

From now until the end of Bowl season, the two top wide receivers of the week will be featured on the All-Star Football Challenge Facebook page www.facebook.com/allstarfootball, along with two top individual performers among quarterbacks, running backs and defensive players. The top weekly vote-getter will proceed to the finals, which run Jan. 19-25.

Smith grabbed 5 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-13 win over Bloomsburg ending an 18-game losing streak to the Huskies. In the game, Smith set a career high with his 144 receiving yards. Smith’s touchdowns and yards now lead the Golden Bears with 487 yards and 10 touchdown grabs this season.

The All-Star Football Challenge features the top college football players competing in a series of skills competitions that put their individual talents on display. Past participants include Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Santana Moss, Vince Young, Vernon Davis, Donovan McNabb, Edgerrin James, and many others.

Coming off its biggest win of the season against Bloomsburg, the Kutztown University earned its highest ranking in school history. KU is ranked eighth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top poll and moves up to fifth in the Super Region I regional rankings.

Kutztown moves up five spots in the national poll and four spots in the regional poll after beating Bloomsburg, 52-14, last Saturday at University Field.  The previous high for Kutztown was when it was ranked 12th earlier this season.  KU has been ranked in the AFCA poll all season and has never been ranked in the national poll for an entire season.

With the win, the Golden Bears (9-1 overall, 6-1 PSAC East) earn a share of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division title and the division's top seed.  It was KU's first win over Bloomsburg since 1992 and second division title in the 96-year history of the program.  As a result, the Golden Bears will host PSAC West champion and 24th-ranked Slippery Rock for the PSAC title Saturday, Nov. 12 beginning at 1:05 pm. at University Field.  A win would give KU its first-ever PSAC title, and will likely ensure the program's second-straight berth to the NCAA Playoffs.

Junior quarterback Kevin Morton was named the PSAC Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week.  Morton threw for 302 yards with four TD strikes on 21-for-34 passing.  He also rushed for 60 yards and a score.  Morton has now thrown 140 pass attempts, spanning over five games, without an interception.  The junior is the PSAC's most efficient passer entering the conference championship game next weekend (164.6).  Morton is third in the PSAC in total offense (280.4) and passing yards (262.0).

Volleyball Playoffs tonight - For the third consecutive season, the Kutztown University women's volleyball team will host a playoff game as it goes up against West Chester University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal match tonight at 7 p.m. at Keystone Arena. The Golden Bears (24-8 overall) enter the PSAC quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed while the Golden Rams (21-13) are the No. 3 seed.  Kutztown holds the edge over WCU, having won three of its last four contests including both this season. KU won both matches in straight-sets. Tickets to the PSAC quarterfinal will be sold at the gym. It is $7 for adults and $2 for students/children. Free admission is available to students from PSAC member institutions with a valid school I.D. Conference passes will be accepted. Sorry, no complimentary tickets are available.

Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test  - Tomorrow, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m., the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct the first-ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The purpose of the test is to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a way to alert the public of national emergencies. The test will occur simultaneously across the United States and the U.S. territories and will last approximately 30 seconds, after which regular programming will resume. The test will appear on all broadcast radio and television stations, cable television systems, satellite radio and television systems, and wireline video service systems.
