The final film for the semester in Kutztown's Pride Against Prejudice Film Series is Shelter on Wed. Nov. 16, at 6 p.m., Boehm 145. A dynamic Q & A will follow. Shelter was a hit in the independent film circuit and explores issues of familial obligations and demands vs. wrestling with the closet and personal aspirations. Shelter has been praised for its ability to explore complex issues without every sounding preachy or forced. Indeed, it is a wonderfully naturalistic coming of age story in a world of complex demands.

Kutztown University Competitive Programming Team participated in a regional competition that is part of the International Programming Competition that takes place each year. On Saturday, Nov. 5, 257 teams competed against one another to solve the greatest number of problems in 5 hours. The team consisting of Tyler Voland, Joe Kelmer, and Brandon Trumble performed well, getting on the board with two problems and finishing in the top 100 of the teams. Many teams end up solving 0 problems so two problems puts Kutztown in a very favorable position. This is the first time since last year that we have scored on the board. And to finish in the top 100 is an achievement in itself. Congratulations to our Programming Team for a job well done.

As the cooler weather moves in, many areas within the campus buildings may experience an imbalance in the efficiency of the heating system. Often, the “quick-fix” is the use of a portable space heater. While this may solve a localized area, it may mask a larger issue that can be easily corrected by facilities technicians. The first step to resolve heating issues is to refer to the facilities department. If the need for a space heater is confirmed, there are specific guidelines that have been established by the university to govern their use. These important safety guidelines have been developed to reduce the chance of accidental fires, burns, or other environmental hazards. Please take the time to review this guideline before using any portable heater in your work area: Appendix VI, University Guidelines for the Use of Supplemental Portable Space Heaters.
If you have any other questions regarding the use of a space heater on campus after reviewing this guideline, please contact the Office of Environmental Health & Safety. Thank you for doing your part to keep our campus fire-safe.
