Adam, benefits manager, Human Resources Dr. Jayne Swanson, associate vice president for Academic Affairs, Assessment and Professional Development Office, Alfred State College, will present a workshop on “Starting at the End: Conducting Assessment with a Focus on Using Results and Closing the Loop” on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 10 – 11:30 a.m. and again at 2 – 3:30 p.m. in MSU 312. This workshop will discuss the process of assessing student learning outcomes by focusing on the final step – using assessment findings for decisions about maintaining or changing the educational experiences related to a student learning goal. Decisions, however, depend on a clear understanding of the nature of the learning goal, the methods, measures, and analyses utilized in the assessment, and typical levels of student performance, among other factors. The workshop’s examination of using assessment results will be informed by specific cases of “closing the loop” at KU and other institutions. Jeann Cengeri, Multicultural Center In Memoriam -- Raymond Lucas, June 29, 1933 - May 6, 2011 - Dr. Lucas was founding chairperson of the Kutztown University Department of Philosophy. His keen academic vision, dedication to philosophy, and steady leadership were formative for both students and colleagues. Ray was remarkably versatile. He was a championship hydroplane racer, opera aficionado, NASCAR and Indy car fan, travelled and studied widely, and enjoyed playing the saxophone. Above all he was devoted to his wife, Iva, and family. Perhaps these words of Hume will resonate most clearly with our memory of Raymond Lucas, and will convey his outlook and his spirit best, ”…the genius of philosophy, if carefully cultivated, must gradually diffuse throughout society … Be a philosopher; but amidst all your philosophy; be still a man.” (An obituary in detail is posted on the "Our Faculty" page of the KU Philosophy Department website.) James Hall, professor emeritus, Philosophy César Chávez, an award-winning print maker and street artist from Oaxaca, Mexico is an Artist-in-Residence in KU's Printmaking studio. This children and young adult library honors the life of the late KU Alumna, Cheryl Okafor, and her dedication to children and education. Donations of new or gently used children/youth books can be placed in drop boxes located all over campus. Checks made out to Berks Women in Crisis are tax deductible, and can be sent to the Women’s Center, OM 126. All proceeds will be used to purchase books and library furnishings.
