Noam Chomsky’s Upcoming Lecture at Kutztown University - Professor Noam Chomsky, a leading philosopher, linguist, and political activist of the past 50 years, is coming to the Philosophy Department at Kutztown University on November 21st to help inaugurate a yearly Lecture Series celebrating UNESCO World Philosophy Day. This day is celebrated to promote understanding among cultures around the world. Professor Chomsky will speak on “The United States and the United Nations.” His lecture will address issues pertaining to global understanding and is expected to critique the current state of affairs and suggest ways for improving global relations.

The central idea behind the celebration of World Philosophy Day is to use philosophical thinking to bring nations and cultures of the world into a more harmonious and respectful co-existence. The Philosophy Department and the entire KU community take it as their responsibility to educate students as citizens of the “global village” that our world has become. This calls for values of mutual acceptance, kindness, non-discrimination, love, and knowledgeable service to humanity everywhere. Chomsky’s philosophical journey, spread over more than half a century, embodies these values. It is fitting that he will deliver the inaugural lecture.

Students, KU faculty and staff, as well the larger community, are welcome to this once in a lifetime opportunity of hearing a world leader of philosophical thought in our times. Prof. Chomsky’s lecture will be delivered at 6:30 P.M. in Schaeffer Auditorium on the campus of Kutztown University. Free tickets to the event are available on campus at the front desk of the McFarland Student Union or by calling to reserve at 610-683-4092. Please see the KU Philosophy Department web site for further updates: http://www.kutztown.edu/academics/liberal_arts/philosophy/

We are grateful to the Kutztown University Foundation and Office of the Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for supporting the event.
Dr. M. Ashraf Adeel, Department of Philosophy

Facility Service Level Impact Notice - In the spirit of open and honest communication, being the basis of good business and interpersonal relationships, I offer the campus community the following information. This information is being provided for anyone who has an outstanding paint request work order in the system, or for anyone contemplating submitting a new one. To ensure maximum coverage, this will also be posted in the Daily Brief.

Our normal staffing of painters is two. Unfortunately both positions are currently not staffed for reasons beyond our control. Therefore, progress on any scheduled paint work from this point on will not be completed and cannot be rescheduled until staffing returns which at this point is unknown. Current analysis of work orders reveals that existing requests are now beyond 200 days from the date of request, and aging with each day we have no one to fulfill the requests. Emergency/urgent paint order requirements (such as removing and/or covering inappropriate graffiti) will still be accomplished by a maintenance repairman either in the General Maintenance Shop or the Night Maintenance Shop.

In the past, we were able to offer an alternative to our customers of utilizing an outside contractor to pay for desired paint work as long as the requestor could fund the work. At this time, we do not have the availability of a staff person to manage any of these types of requests, and so we cannot offer this level of service. The only painting that can be done from this point will be in conjunction with larger scoped renovation projects already planned of which painting is only a part.

I apologize for this inconvenience, and will notify the community when the situation improves. The Work Control Center (WCC) will not be able to provide any further information or updates on open work orders of this type.

As always, thank you for your continue patience and perseverance.

Students are invited to talk with President Cevallos in an open meeting on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to noon in Boehm 145. Dr. Cevallos welcomes your thoughts, concerns and suggestions regarding Kutztown University.
Toyia S. Reed, Office of the President

Twice a year at Kutztown University we experience nature’s wonderful transition between the warm and cold seasons and along with this the limitations inherent in our university’s institutional heating and cooling systems. In most cases our building heating and cooling system configuration does not allow for simultaneous operation of both systems. Therefore, in order to activate the heating system we have to close down the cooling system. This process is a time consuming building by building effort. Once the transition is made, it is not possible to try to convert back just for a period of a day or two of abnormal weather.

During these change of weather periods we have to choose a target date that hopefully will cause the least discomfort overall for the entire community. Sometimes the warm days are directly followed by cold nights. Since our community includes a large population of resident hall students, the cooler nights are a major consideration in timing the transition. The cold versus warm weather stabilizes around mid October, however, we prepare to be able to make the transition by Oct. 1, if a prolonged cold weather pattern is established. Actually, exactly the opposite has occurred this September. Normally this transition process can be completed in five to seven working days for the entire campus and the buildings are transitioned in a pre-established priority manner. If there are problems with some of the buildings’ heating system once activated, it could take longer for those facilities. We expect to have all systems on line by early next week at the latest, barring any unforeseen major issues. As always, your patience and understanding during this transition period is greatly appreciated.

The Office of International Programs has started a new program - KU Conversation Partners is a cross cultural dialogue between international students and native English speakers at KU. The goal of this program is to create the opportunity for meaningful interaction and friendships between the US and international students.

Please share this program with your students! Students who are studying or speak a foreign language can apply to our Conversation Partner Program and we will try to match them with a native speaker of the language they are studying. After students are matched with a partner, they can meet as often as they want, based on their schedules. The program is unstructured and they can take part in activities that interest both of them, like coffee, soccer, or lunch. Many people meet for an hour and spend half an hour speaking English and the other 30 minutes speaking the other language. It’s a great way to improve their language skills and get to know great people!

For more information, stop by The Office of International Programs or email Jen Topp at jtopp516@live.kutztown.edu.
