ATHLETICS

Kutztown climbs to No. 19 in AFCA Top 25 poll - The Kutztown University football team is ranked 19th in the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) top 25 poll released Monday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (1-0 overall) climbed four spots from last week and received 203 points following their 56-30 victory over Saint Anselm College. In that game, quarterback Kevin Morton threw a career-high six touchdown passes as KU finished with a school record total of 697 yards. Chris McCormick had three touchdown receptions.

Kutztown rushed for 384 yards as senior Robbie Frey and junior Josh Mastromatto each topped the 100-yard mark, becoming the first KU pair to do that in the same game on the ground since Maurice Adams and Tony Bria did it in 2005 against Mansfield.

Frey led KU with 140 yards on 16 carries. Two of his carries resulted in touchdowns. In addition to rushing for 120 yards on 11 carries, Mastromatto returned four kickoffs for 126 yards. Sophomore Curtis Wortham added a career-high 78 yards on nine carries.

Defensively, Kutztown forced four turnovers. Alex DiNolfi and Greg Carroll had interceptions. DiNolfi and Richard White recovered fumbles. Though, the Hawks scored plenty of points, the Golden Bear defense made plays when they were necessary. Andrew Hodges led KU with nine tackles. John Kreuer and Colin Henny added 5.5 tackles each. Brett Moss had a quarterback sack and Chris Davidson had a pair of pass breakups.

Kutztown visits 18th-ranked Mercyhurst College (1-0) Saturday starting at noon.

(Announcements and other information that have previously appeared in the Daily Brief.)
Kutztown University’s Off Campus Student Life and Commuter Services Offices will once again be organizing a “KU Community Blitz on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.  With the assistance of volunteers from the University as well as the town, our goal is to welcome back students living in the Kutztown community and wish them a great year.

The plan is to canvas Kutztown in teams of three to four and distribute welcome bags to identified student housing. We will form at the Trinity Church (357 W. Main Street) at 10:30 a.m. where assignments, instructions, maps and bags will be distributed. I am anticipating that with enough volunteers, we can canvas the Kutztown area in an hour or so. When you have completed your rounds, lunch will be provided at Trinity Church for all volunteers.

In order for this event to happen, we are in need of your help. If you are able to give a little bit of your time towards the success of this venture, please e-mail me at mangold@kutztown.edu. Friends and family are welcome to join us. Please feel free to share this request with other members of your staff and student organizations that you oversee. Thank you in advance for helping to make Kutztown Community Blitz another success!
