ANNOUNCEMENTS

Join ACE in celebration of National Poetry Month featuring Joaquin Zihuatanejo, a poet, spoken word artist, and award-winning teacher who comes to Kutztown on Tuesday, Apr. 10, at 7 p.m. in MSU 218. He was born and raised in the barrio of East Dallas. In 2004, Zihuatanejo competed in the National Poetry Slam as part of the Dallas Poetry Slam team, which placed third. In 2008, he won the Individual World Poetry Slam and was the winner of the World Cup of Poetry Slam in 2009. Zihuatanejo has also been a teacher, specializing in English and creative writing. In his work, Joaquín writes about the hardships of his youth, the beauty of his culture, and teaching inner city youth that poetry can save them. He strives to capture the duality of the Chicano culture. Never sacrificing substance for style, Joaquin’s shows are a verbal display of fireworks that leave audiences enthralled and amazed. He has self-published two collections of poetry and has just completed his first spoken word CD: "Barrio Songs, A Spoken Word Collection." KU students can participate and recite their poems.
