KU PRIDE
Bethlehem-resident and criminal justice major Dan Lasko, a junior here at KU, lost his leg to an IED in Afghanistan, but it wasn’t enough to slow this flag football athlete! Lasko competed in the Wounded Warriors Game in Indianapolis, Ind., last Wednesday, earning the game’s Most Valuable Player award with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The game was played as a part of the festivities leading up to Sunday’s NFL Super Bowl XLVI. Take a look at the interview with ESPN and Ch.69 below.

Kutztown University‘s Modern Language Studies Department will be screening the first film in the Spring German Film Series today at 3 p.m. and tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in DeFrancesco 109 - the film is Vincent will Meer (Vincent wants to sea). In this award-winning film, a young man suffering from Tourette's Syndrome travels with two other patients from an institution to Italy to fulfill his mother's last wish.



The next University Curriculum Committee (UCC) meeting for the 2011-2012 academic year will be held on Feb. 23. The deadline for submission of all proposals for this meeting is 12 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, Feb. 9. Please submit new proposals prior to this deadline to the UCC secretary, Bethany French, in the Provost’s Office, 309 Stratton Admin. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. French at x3-1312. Kutztown University’s new lecture program, the Anabaptist Lecture Series, tonight, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the MSU Alumni Auditorium with presenter Donald Kraybill, Ph.D., nationally recognized authority of Anabaptist groups, Old Order Amish and Mennonites.

Kraybill will describe and explain Old Order Mennonite culture and compare them with Amish practices. He will present research from his book, “Horse-and-Buggy Mennonites: Hoofbeats of Humility in a Postmodern World.” The book also compares and contrasts the Wengers with other similar traditional Anabaptist groups.

A professor at Elizabethtown College, Dr. Kraybill is author/co-author of 16 books. He studies socio-cultural change in Anabaptist communities and also serves as the series editor of The Young Center Books in Anabaptist and Pietist books published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

The Anabaptist Lecture Series and Book Club are sponsored by The Pennsylvania German Cultural Club, Rohrbach Library and the late Dr. Arnold Newman, in partnership with the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University.

Kutztown University Radio (KUR) will be presented with the “Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Quality Member Criteria Gold Award” at the “Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS)” Conference in New York City on March 3. The “IBS Quality Member Criteria” awards judge college and university radio stations on 20 key areas quality student radio stations should successfully encompass, including management, programming, and structure.

Winter Family Day – Saturday, Feb. 18 - Students, Staff, Faculty and Families are invited to our 2nd Winter Family Day! We will have a variety of games, crafts, food, and activities for all ages at our PRE-GAME FUN, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center. This includes the Climbing Wall, Herps Alive – an interactive reptile and amphibian experience, and students and family members can enter a drawing to participate in a basketball shooting contest to win a $200 bookstore certificate. Professor of fine arts, Evan Summer, presents a Faculty Shop Talk, “Printmaking in the U.S. and China” on Friday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m. in MSU. The presentation is free and open to the public.

 

Professor Evan Summer specializes in etching and combines it with other techniques and prepares his own printing. Summer’s art work has been displayed around the world in many of his own exhibitions including the Guanlan International Printmaking Workshop in China (2010), and the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice (2007). Summer’s also received the Tai-he Masterpiece Award at the Beijing International Print Biennial along with two awards offered by Kutztown University. In late August 2011, Professor Summer was recognized by the KU Foundation & Alumni Engagement with the Arthur & Isabel Wiesenberger Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching presented annually to one faculty member who has served Kutztown University in a manner which sets him or her apart from faculty colleagues.

Call for Programs -“Interfaith Perspectives for Community, Peace, and Social Justice” - The Kutztown University Commission on Human Diversity is hosting an educational event on Friday, Mar. 30. This conference will create an open space to make connections in and between our individual perspectives on faith through interfaith dialogue. Our goal is to open dialogue within our community about interfaith work and the exploration of common areas for action among communities of diverse religious, cultural, and ideological traditions – including those with no single spiritual reference or no religious belief system. We are interested in finding people in our area and KU community who would be willing to share their perspectives as part of a panel and/or to run a short break out session on a specific related topic. The Keynote Address is "Updating Anselm's Ontological Argument for God's Existence Again," by Dr. Lynne Rudder Baker, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of Massachusetts, Amherst.


Eve Ensler’s, “The Vagina Monologues” returns, and will be presented by the Women’s Center and FMLA on Feb. 9 and 10, in MSU, room 218, at 7 p.m. This student production is performed in conjunction with worldwide V-Day campaigns to raise awareness and funds for local anti-violence initiatives. Tickets are $5 with a student I.D. and $10 for non-students and may be purchased by cash or check at the MSU Information Desk. Proceeds will be donated to Berks Women in Crisis, Planned Parenthood of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the V-DAY International Spotlight: Women and Children of Haiti. CHAMBLISS STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - Application Deadline: Feb. 9, 2012
The Chambliss Student Academic Achievement Awards were established through a generous gift provided by Dr. Carlson R. Chambliss, who served as a member of the Kutztown University faculty from 1970 until 2003. The purpose of the awards is to recognize the exceptional individual achievements of a select group of senior students as their careers at Kutztown University draw to a close.

Faculty and staff at Kutztown University are encouraged to nominate students worthy of consideration for this prestigious award. The criterion requires that the applicant exemplify an individual achievement in one or more of the following areas in order to be considered for one of the twelve awards. The areas of achievement are:

a) Successfully completed research projects.
b) Original artwork of high quality.
c) Artistic performances (music, chorus, drama, etc.) of high quality.
d) Original writing in literature or meritorious writing in other fields.
e) Noteworthy achievements in athletics
f) Outstanding service to the Kutztown University community

Dr. Chambliss has provided the resources for up to twelve medals (2 gold, 4 silver, 6 copper) to be issued annually to the students selected for this award. In addition, each student recipient will receive a certificate acknowledging conferral of the award. Please consider nominating one of your students for this prestigious award.
