Kutztown University joins the growing population of successful printmakers in Oaxaca, Mexico with an exhibition featuring 28 different prints at Benito Juarez University’s gallery in Oaxaca, Mexico during the month of July. The theme of the exhibition is Self-Portraits: Real or Imagined. Five faculty members will be exhibiting their artistic interpretations of this theme alongside self-portraits by alumni and current students of the KU printmaking program. Printmaking is an age-old art using a variety of methods including woodblock, etching, serigraphy, and lithography. Oaxaca, Mexico is a powerhouse for this art form with a great tradition of extremely successful printmakers coming out of the city from Rufino Tamayo to Rodolfo Morales. Oaxaca’s best-known printmaker is Francisco Toledo who’s Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca, is the largest public print collection in Latin America, and a magnet for printmakers. Under the leadership of Professor Evan Summer, who has won international acclaim for his etchings, Kutztown University is one of the few schools that has managed to maintain a thriving traditional printmaking program in an increasingly digital age. This exhibition is not the first artistic exchange between Kutztown and Oaxaca. In 2007, KU's Rohrbach Library exhibited a portfolio of Oaxacan prints, which are now part of the library’s permanent collection. Danita Moore, a 2011 KU graduate in fine arts, did a summer-long printmaking residency in Oaxaca. Moore is contributing a woodblock print done on rice paper to the current exhibition. (The print to the right is by Ms. Moore.) In October 2011, Mexican printmaker Cesar Chavez spent two weeks in residence as a visiting artist in the KU printmaking studio. Chavez, who studied at Oaxaca’s Benito Juarez University, made the arrangements for this exhibition to continue the cultural exchange between the two universities, both well known for their visual art programs. The Undergraduate Office of Admissions is hosting campus tours until Saturday, Aug. 11. Campus tours are offered Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. The morning tour includes a presentation by an admissions counselor at 11 a.m. All tours begin at the Admissions Center and visitors are encouraged to make a reservation for campus tours on our website: http://visit.kutztown.edu.
