KU's new computer testing center opens this week! The Stratton Computer Testing Center is in the Stratton Administration Building. It is one of only a few commonwealth locations available to administer tests required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for educator certification. Testing begins in June and will be available year-round to university students, alumni and community members. To register, test-takers visit: http://www.pa.nesinc.com.

Observe the transit of Venus - Venus transits in front of the sun only twice each century. It happened in 2004 and will happen again this Tuesday, Jun. 5, then not again until December of 2117. You are invited to visit the KU Observatory (top floor of Grim) to witness the event! If the sky is clear, the Physics Club and I will have the observatory open. With special Solar filters on our telescopes, you'll easily be able to see Venus in front of the Sun, as well as any Sunspots due to the Sun's magnetic activity.The transit will last from about 6 p.m. until after sunset, at which time we'll point the telescopes at Saturn so you can see its great rings and a moon or two. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center presents center’s inaugural volume publication - The Friend in Need: An Annotated Translation of an Early Pennsylvania Folk-Healing Manual, by KU's Patrick J. Donmoyer. Nearly 200 year ago, the legendary Berks County author Johann Georg Hohman published "The Friend in Need" in 1813, the precursor to America's most popular work of powwow, folk healing, and magic, "The Long Lost Friend," compiled in 1819. This obscure piece of Berks County history is now available for the first time in English, allowing readers access to historical prayers, benedictions and charms used in early America for healing and protection among the Pennsylvania Dutch. With complete annotations, numerous illustrations and tables, this work is a wealth of information concerning the origins and history of the folk tradition of powwowing in Pennsylvania, and it is available just in time for its bicentennial release at the Kutztown Folk Festival. 2012 Kutztown Folk Festival seeks volunteers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 30, to Sunday, July 8, to assist in several areas at the 2012 Festival. Assignments are available as greeters at the festival gates, survey takers to interview visitors and several other general tasks. Volunteers may sign up for three-hour shifts throughout the week. Free passes as well as a festival pin are our gift to you! This is our way of showing our appreciation to our volunteers. Construction Notice: For the safety of all, it will be necessary to close South Campus Drive (SCD) from Beck Hall to Dixon Hall while the west wall of the old Heat Plant is demolished. This closure will take place on Wednesday Jun. 6 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Please enter SCD from Main Street if you are going to Public Safety, Facilities, GBVS, or any of the Residence Halls except Dixon and Deatrick Halls. Please enter SCD from Baldy if you are going to Keystone, Dixon Hall, Deatrick Hall or the South Dining Hall.

Kutztown Borough will be replacing the water main that runs under Kutztown Road. The construction is expected to start (depending on the weather) at the intersection of College Blvd and Kutztown Road on Jun. 8. They will be closing one side of the road, one section at a time, with flagmen directing traffic around that section. At the end of each day the trench will be filled in and the road opened completely. The excavated section will be passable but won’t have a finished paved surface for a month. The surface will be rough, but passable. The water main will be supplying the Giant being built to the west of campus - the trench will begin at the college and end at the Giant.
