The Psychology Department wishes to inform the campus community that our administrative assistant, Jean Waxler, passed away on Oct. 30. We deeply appreciate the service she rendered to our staff and students; we will especially miss Jean’s quirky sense of humor.  A memorial service will be held this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Edward J. College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty First Thursday!  Valerie Trollinger, associate professor of the Music Department, will present “5,000 Languages, 5,000 Ways to Sing?, this morning at 11 a.m. in Sharadin120.  Valerie will present research concerning the history of singing predominantly addresses the use of singing as a cultural phenomenon rather than as a physiological one.  While linguistic anthropologists surmise that there are about 5,000 distinct languages in the world, the relationship of the physical act of speaking to the physical act of singing at the historical level has yet to be researched.  This paper presents an introduction to possible relationships between the development of singing and speaking from early man to contemporary vocal traditions found around the world. Do we really have 5,000 ways to sing as well?  Come to the presentation to find out!

Bowling @ FDU has been cancelled

Kutztown University student-athletes continue to shine in the classroom with record breaking graduation rates. According to the annual Federal Graduation Rate Report released on October 25 by the NCAA, KU athletes graduate at a significantly higher rate than the national average. The 72 percent graduation rate of KU student-athletes easily dominates the national student-athlete average of 55 percent.  “We are very proud of our continued success in the classroom,” KU athletics director Greg Bamberger said.  “Academic success is a priority of our department and it takes commitment, determination and discipline from our student-athletes, coaches and many others to make it happen.”

Anthropology Club Field trip - The Anthropology Club is sponsoring a trip to the Penn Museum (Philadelphia), on Saturday, Nov. 3.  We will leave by 9:30 a.m. and return by about 6 p.m.  All students are invited to join us, so long as space is still available, but seating is limited. This competition gives students the opportunity to win up to $10,000 for starting a business. David Jaindl, Jaindl Turkey Farms, will be this week's guest speaker. Kutch and students in the graphic novel class will welcome Nick Sousanis, doctoral candidate in the education program at Columbia University's Teachers College. Sousanis is completing his entire dissertation in comic form. He will give a talk on the inspiration and creative process behind his work. World Poverty: Explanations & Responsibilities – KU celebrates UNESCO’s World Philosophy Day with a lecture by distinguished philosopher Thomas Pogge, the Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale University on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in Boehm145.

Dr. Pogge’s work on global poverty has stirred a huge ethical debate on this vital issue. His lecture will address issues pertaining to severe global poverty and is expected to critique the current state of human rights and suggest ways for improving global justice.
