ANNOUNCEMENTS
Hex in the City - Come for an evening of celebration for our local indigenous folk art. Original architectural barn star artifacts from 19th century barns in Berks and Lehigh County, as well as the original folk art of Eric Claypoole and Patrick Donmoyer, will offer an introduction to the traditional folk art of the Pennsylvania Dutch, known as Barn Stars and Hex Signs. In addition, a sampling of artifacts from the museum collection of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center will illustrate tools of the trade and other artifacts displaying traditional motifs. It’s a collaborative exhibition of the Eckhaus and the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University. Opening tomorrow evening, Thursday, Oct. 18, 6-9:30 p.m., at the Eckhaus on Greenwich & Main Street in Kutztown. Show runs until Nov. 17.

Teaching about the Negro Baseball League - Dr. Maria Sanelli presents a talk about how themes and issues reflected in studying African American baseball are rooted in U.S. history and social studies. These themes include economic, social and political studies, family history and genealogy, education, military history, and civil rights. These themes can be explored by examining individuals (talent), organizations (teams), and communities (towns) involved with African American Baseball. Lesson plans will be shared that synthesize the most reliable primary and secondary source materials on the subject in a useful format for educators. The presentation is tonight in the Rohrbach Library, room 100B, 7-8 p.m., with a tour of the National Baseball Museum Pride and Passion Exhibit to follow.

KU hosts retired September 11th air traffic control supervisor Mal Fuller to campus on tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Boehm Science Center, room 145, for a presentation about the events of September 11, 2001. Fuller was the watch supervisor at the Pittsburgh International Airport air traffic control tower and radar room on that fateful day and was involved in the shutdown of American airspace that day. Fuller will present a timeline from his perspective that includes the evacuation of the tower and radar room following the Pentagon strike as United flight 93 approached Pittsburgh’s airport. Upon returning to the tower, Fuller noticed that United 93 was gone from the radar scope.

The countdown continues to "The Race Experience" - Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Race (numbering order has been changed for the purpose of this message)

6. Most variation is within, not between, "races." Of the small amount of total human variation, 85% exists within any local population, be they Italians, Kurds, Koreans or Cherokees. About 94% can be found within any continent. That means two random Koreans may be as genetically different as a Korean and an Italian.

5. Slavery predates race. Throughout much of human history, societies have enslaved others, often as a result of conquest of war, even debt, but not because of physical characteristics or a belief in natural inferiority. Due to a unique set of historical circumstances, ours was the first slave system where all the slaves shared similar physical characteristics.

Join the Department of Academic Enrichment for Fast Pass To Learning on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 11 a.m.-noon in the lobby of RL27. The event focuses on practical study skills and access to academic success resources, including Tutoring Services, The Writing Center, Disability Services Office, Counseling Services, and more. Students will rotate through stations, picking up Fast Pass cards with tips and QR codes that link to tutorials and helpful websites. A sophomore student will share the strategies that took him out of academic jeopardy. Healthy snacks are available along with a chance to win a $25 Paw Pass. Programs are available to all Faculty & Staff and non-PEBTF Highmark members can earn credit toward the Healthy U wellness program requirements.

Communication Design Professors Vicki Meloney and Elaine Cunfer invite you to check out their junior-level Graphic Design I poster design entries to the Skopje International Poster Design Contest in the Sharadin Student Gallery until Wednesday, Oct. 17. Kutztown University’s Love Your Body Day - The Kutztown University Women’s Center hosts “Love Your Body Day” on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in MSU 218; followed at 3 p.m. by speaker Sonya Renee’s presentation, “The Body is Not an Apology,” in MSU 183. Love Your Body Day is a daylong event offering information, chocolate, yoga, free hugs, facials, chocolate fondue, and make your own “I love my _____” T-shirts. The Health and Wellness Center will provide flu shots to students with valid KU ID. “Give Your Body a Voice” will be set up. This is an opportunity to give a video testimonial about your body image and self-esteem. Also get a chance to experience the Berks Women in Crisis Shoe Project where the shoes tell the stories of sexual assault. Contribute your story or campus experience to the Kutztown University Shoe Project. At noon, writer Susan Shelly will tell her personal story of how she turned fear and hopelessness into hope and opportunity. Along with Susan, there will also be yoga from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Zumba from 1 – 2 p.m., and meditation at 2 p.m.

Guest Artist – Marius Watz is an artist who uses visual programming techniques to create generative digital and traditional artwork. His work spans from interactive music visualizations, to 3D printing, to light installations, and everything in between. His lecture will introduce his work, his process, and the workshop will be a hands-on seminar covering visual programming techniques using the Processing language. The lecture is on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in Sharadin120. There is also a hands-on workshop on Friday, Oct. 26 at 9 a.m.
