KU Has an App for That! – For prospective students, that is. KU’s new mobile app is built for use on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Functionality includes: About KU, the four academic colleges, campus tour, news feed, sports feed, Twitter feed, admissions notifications, and a link to Apply Now! Leonard Pitts Jr., an American commentator, journalist, novelist and a nationally-syndicated columnist and winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary will be presenting at KU on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m., in Boehm145. Topic of discussion is “Alternate Realities: Political Discourse in a Facts-Optional Nation.” This presentation is a free, ticketed event. Tickets are available with a KU ID at the Student Union Information desk.

The Office of Graduate Admissions will be hosting the Fall 2012 Graduate Open House on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 4:30 p.m. in the MSU Formal Dining Room. This program will provide prospective graduate students with the opportunity to speak with faculty about coursework and program requirements, current graduate students, and staff from the Offices of Graduate Admissions, Financial Aid, and Career Development. Additionally, there will be a breakout session at 5 p.m. for those interested in the Resident Director position through KU’s Housing Office, and a breakout session at 5:30 p.m. for those interested in the MBA program. Fall 2012 Math, Science, & Technology Open House: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is holding a Math, Science, and Technology Open House on Saturday Oct. 20. This year the annual “Halloween Happenings” will include the Sleepy Hollow petting zoo- 2:30-6:30 p.m. (DMZ), Halloween activities at Frank’s Fun House (Rothermel Hall) and the Pumpkin Patch (Old Main Concourse) from 3-7 p.m. and Trick or Treating from 4-6 p.m. (Old Main). New this year- we are including a book drive and art supplies donation for local agencies.

There were 15 lucky winners who received the most expensive item on their transaction for FREE in the KU Student Bookstore during a Back-to-School promotion that ran from August 25 – 29. The Bookstore gave away nearly $1,500 in textbooks and course supplies. These funds are made available from surplus in our Emergency Textbook Fund which we build by selling unusable or donated books online. If you know of a student who loses their books due to fire, flood or other severe circumstances, please be sure to direct them to the KU Student Bookstore, where we have a fund established to help replace their books.

CET will be sponsoring a workshop from 11 a.m. – noon on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in OM297 titled Introduction to SPSS and presented by Dr. Anita Meehan. Topic description: This hands-on workshop is meant for those with little to no previous experience with SPSS. Basic data entry and data structure functions, steps for running an analysis, and viewing output will be practiced using SPSS on PCs.
