The sun is shining, we're all rested, and have almost completely forgotten about that
terrible schedule last year, and the decreased budget, and the day Johnny threw up in the
clay bin, and the second grade teacher who always sent her kids late........... and you're
remembering Tiffany's excitement about Claude Monet and Mike's behavior improvement after
doing his beautiful painting, and Billy's Mom's comment that her family really appreciates
what you're teaching her son. I guess teaching is like childbirth..... after a period of
time we forget the pain in our job and remember the joy in guiding our students to
exciting places that they have never been to before.
We have to keep that in mind. The reason we are in this game is to see the look of
excitement on our kids' faces as they discover something about art and about themselves.
In the process, we are constantly discovering wonders about ourselves. Rest up and renew!

Hello Region 6 art educators!
I hope your teaching year was filled with many discoveries and successes
At the writing of this report, final plans were being made for the combined Region 4, 6,
and 8 mini-conference to be held in State College, PA. Jackie Thomas, Harriet Rosenberg,
and Paul Bolin had graciously consented to be on the program. I thank Candace Smith
(Region 4) for coordinating the event this year.
I know I mentioned in my last report about the possibility of having a mini-conference in Somerset this year. However, due to time restraints with me, Joy Knepp (Shanksville-Stonycreek) and I will be planning an event for the following year. So, hang in there Somerset and Cambria teachers. I know you are out there.
As for Region 6 art happenings, Joy Knepp (Somerset county rep, Shanksville-Stonycreek), reports that during the long winter months the Somerset County Art Show was held at Laurel Arts in Somerset. Each grade level, elementary, middle and high school. exhibited artworks for three weeks. More than 70 pieces were shown during each show. Some of the schools and teachers who participated were: Dave Ebersole (Berlin-Brothersvalley), Joan Johnson and Francine Keiffer (Conemaugh Township), Jane Holt and Pat Weston (Rockwood), Lynette Ely (North Star), Mack Beal (Turkeyfoot Valley), Bridget Mayak, Linda Weible, Randy Myers, and John Minnich (Somerset), and Joy Knepp (Shanksville-Stonycreek).
A five day Artist In Residence Program took place at Shanksville-Stonycreek school in Creative Dramatics this April. Debra Gorden, a professional actress from Pittsburgh, worked with students from the visual arts and the creative writing classes as well as the speech classes in the high school. The students learned basic techniques from the theatre such as voice, stage presence, and improvisation skills. The teachers who worked on the project were Joy Knepp, Amy Svonavec, and Diane Tiffany.
In the Shade-Central City School District there was an Artist in Residence program held in February. Cindy Snodgrass, a fiber artist, worked with elementary students designing and creating banners. This program was coordinated by the school principal, Carolyn Cornish. All the Artist in Residence programs scheduled in Somerset are sponsored by Laurel Arts in Somerset. The funding is granted by this organization as well as the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts.
Plans are in the works for a Somerset County Art Club to be established this spring. All the schools have been contacted to recruit members in grades 8-12.
Paula Carlson (Bellwood-Antis) reports that the art students at Bell wood-Antis began the month of March by taking time to celebrate and reflect. The art classroom was decorated and a banner that was placed in the hall was signed by the art students. It proclaimed that "March is Youth Art Month." Each class had a party with cupcakes that were decorated with icings to create edible works of art. A discussion was held about the importance of art in Schools and the various arts organizations such as NAEA and PAEA.
A real highlight for the Bellwood art student was doing the paper marbling. Monies for the project was received from a grant from the school district's Foundation. The students each created marbled works of which one was matted for display. Plans for a matted print to be presented to the Bellwood-Antis Foundation are being made. When asked about their reactions to the papermaking projects, one student, Amanda George, said "I am intrigued with the way the colors reacted with the mixtures to create beautiful patterns and designs." Amanda really liked it and said "I thought that it was one of the best projects that we've done." Again, thanks to John Skrabalak (Altoona)for getting the ball rolling.
The other highlight was that the Art 3 and 4 students as well as the Spanish 4 students traveled to Washington, D.C. to the Woman's Museum of Art to see the Freda Kahlo exhibit. Upon returning, students viewed a video about the life and works of Kahlo. The students noted that she was one artist who really could express her innermost feelings through art.
Sharon Wall and John Skrabalak, both from Altoona, had art works on display in the juried art exhibition, "Artists In Our Midst," at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona. Sharon received a Juror Award for her painted quilt titled, "Circus Babies from the Sky," John's Watercolor painting was titled "In a Flurry." The exhibit ran from March 8 to April 27. A reception was held to honor all the artists.
2D and 3D art works from the students of Sharon Wall, Preston Rice, and John Skrabalak were on display in the school's library for the celebration of YAM. The Altoona chapter of the NAHS hosted a reception for the student artists, as well as hanging and dismantling the exhibit.
John Skrabalak (Altoona) designed the stage set and graphics for the high school's production of Fiddler on the Roof. The production, directed by Nanette Analinger, received nightly standing ovations.
Students of Sharon Wall's (Altoona) "Art In Public Places" course painted a huge mural depicting students, past and present, walking across the bridge that separates the A and B building. Students worked on individual ideas, and a mural committee comprised of faculty members and administration collaborated and approved the final design. The mural, located in the A building main stairway, was financed via the school district's monies and donations.
Also, at the writing of this report, Blair County art teachers were busily preparing for the annual Blair County Arts Festival to be held once again in May at the Altoona Campus of Penn State. ARTS INC., the integrated arts performance troupe of Altoona High School will be presenting their original production of, "Do You Call That Art?" at the festival. The group sponsors are Nanette Ansfinger (Drama) and John Skrabalak (Art).
Hope your summer vacation is going well. You can now FAX me news and concerns. So drop me a line, fax or call...

As usual, we had a lot of activities going on in the Spring. Here is a report of recent and upcoming events in our region. Our Region 8 Spring Mini-conference was held March 23rd in the new Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville. Attendance was not as good as usual, however, I personally feel that this was one of the most rewarding programs we have arranged. The hospital arranged a tour for us and explained some of the design philosophy that went into the planning of this new facility. We saw most of the building, we saw staff and patients. It is unlike any hospital I've ever seen before. Our region can consider itself fortunate to have such an exceptional hospital available for the children of our area. It was especially good to see school art professionally framed and given prominent space on the halls of the hospital. Work was requested from area school districts and then juried. Art does make this hospital much more welcoming and more home-like. Instead of the usual bunch of generic professional prints or paintings greeting the young patients here, the walls are covered with high-quality artwork created by their peers.
Region members who did attend were also privileged to see the fantastic bas-relief sculptures which Karen Ross is creating for each floor of the hospital. Karen is an art teacher in the Lewisburg School District. She has volunteered her time and skills to make the atmosphere of this facility even more livable. In her workshop, Karen talked about her involvement with the Hospital and explained how she is producing her sculptures and how her technique has evolved. Karen is an inspirational person. I believe that everyone who attended came away impressed with the difference one person can make.
Our second presenter was Catheal Weiser. Catheal currently teaches Art in the Montoursville School District. This was Catheal's first workshop presentation. She did an excellent program on "Garbage Art." We learned some of Catheal's techniques for utilizing minimal resources (stuff that's free or cheap) to produce art in the classroom.
The 5th Annual Region 8 Art Educator's show was held in the Cloverleaf Barn's new one-room schoolhouse. The show ran from April 20th through May 6th. A big help in facilitating the show was Kathy Dobash Kantner. In addition to teaching art in Southern Columbia, Kathy is also Gallery director at the Cloverleaf. Although some new people showed this year, we wish that more educators would participate. This is a good chance to show the public that we, the local art teacher, can produce professional quality art ourselves.
On Saturday, April 27, Regions 4, 6, and 8 will be co-sponsoring a combined region conference. The event will be held in State College at the new Mt. Nittany Middle School. Presenters include: Harriet Rosenberg ("Paper Cuts"), Jackie Thomas ("Felt-making") and Paul Bolin ("ABC, Appropriation, Borrowing, and Commandeering.") We hope people take advantage of this opportunity. If things go well, it would be possible to make this an annual event. For more information, contact either Candace Smith (Reg. 4), John Skrabalak (Reg. 6) or Lynn and Al Stola (Reg. 8).
During the fall, we will be running a bus trip to New York City. It will be a day trip, on Saturday, October 26th. Passengers will be able to board in Sunbury, Muncy, and Bloomsburg. Cost per person is $24.00. Contact us for more information.

Congratulations! We all made it through another school year and hope your summer includes much rest and anticipation of renewing activities. Region 9 winter/summer activities kept us in contact with many of you. We welcome all our new members and enjoyed meeting some of you at our spring meeting. In March, Region 9 hosted a very successful YAM Exhibit for the Eastern Region of PAEA. The Mail at Steamtown in Scranton Pa. gave us the exposure for the K-12 100 works. We would like to especially thank the following art educators: Cathy Corkill, Laura Lehnsmann, Mary Belle Gilroy, Asha Jones, Nancy Yamin, Dottie Quatra, Michelle Stedenfsld, Todd Sykes, George Barbolish, Jan Henning, Susan Pethick. Their time and effort helped make it happen. Congratulations to Grace Bochak; her student's work represented Region 9 in the State YAM Exhibit in Harrisburg.
On May 3, Region 9 hosted a meeting /workshop at McNichols Plaza School in Scranton. Harriet Rosenberg, paper artist, gave a workshop entitled "Pushing the Cut Edge." With both traditional techniques and multicultural roots, world wide and modem image making were explored during this exciting workshop. Opportunities to connect cross and integrating curriculums were developed with basic but fabulously simple material; scissors and paper. Harriet shared her own expertise as a music, language arts and theater teacher as she demonstrated her cutting art.
For NEIU 19 Art Educators' Arts Alive will again be held for gifted high school art students at Keystone College this summer. NEIU 19 art teachers in both elementary and secondary art are invited to be part of the four week program working along with the students. If interested in this opportunity, please contact NEIU 19.
Congratulations to Catherine Richmond Cullen, who will be receiving the 1996 Margaretta Belin Chamberlain Award for her commitment and dedication to education and her pursuit of excellence in her work.
Region 9 has made the commitment to be the host for the 1997 PAEA conference in Scranton. The host site will be the Raddison Hotel (Lackawanna Station.) This will be a first for Region 9. Plans are starting to formulate and we will be meeting this summer. If you are interested in being part of the planning/working committees, please contact us. Your help will be very much appreciated and needed. If you have any questions or would like to share with us something about your program, please call or write.

Spring has certainly sprung in Region 10! Summer is on its way. We have been the happy participants in a variety of art related events during the last few months and I expect that next month will be even busier before summer break.
Several local districts celebrated YAM with National Honor Society induction ceremonies. Easton High School art teacher Loren Marquardt and officers, Megan Coble (President), Louise Schomp (V.P.), Sara Billotti (Secretary) and Jessica Hagenbach (Treasurer) welcomed 31 students into the newly formed Easton branch of NAHS. Local artist Berrisford Booth assisted the students in presenting a fine event.
Nazareth High School hosted its Annual Invitational Art Exhibition, entitled "Personal Images," which was on display in its Eagle Nest Gallery from March 8th to April 4th.
Area Art teachers were featured at the Open Space Gallery in Allentown, in the "Artist / Educator Exhibition," which ran from March 13 to April 6. The show, curated by NAEA member Dennis Danko, who teachers at Dieruff High School, featured 14 current and retired art teachers from the Lehigh Valley Area.
The Allentown Art Museum hosted a "collaborative lesson celebrating women through visual art," entitled "One for all, all four women," which was presented by the faculty and students of the Moravian Academy, Palisades High School, and Souderton High School.
Congratulations to Robert Blanchard, for receiving the Allentown Arts Commission's eighth annual Arts Ovation Award in the area of visual arts. Blanchard, who has taught 3-D art for 30 years at Allen High School, helped organize the school's Art Academy. He also helped create the first Arts Ovation prize.
At Saucon Valley High School, officers Christine Lintner, Mary Beth Petrella, Dennis Dias and Jaclyn Palos officiated in the induction of 28 members in SVHS' first NAHS ceremony. The members hosted a Spring Crafts Party for the children of Allentown's 6th Street Shelter in April. Saucon Valley plans a second ceremony to take place during its Spring Arts festival in May. Other events planned for that week include the annual K - 12 Art Exhibit, the Spring Concert, an evening of One-Act Plays, and the presentation of long-term independent study projects produced by the participants of the art / science collaborative field trip to Dominica, with an accompanying slide presentation.
Please send your articles to me for our next newsletter. Have a happy and productive spring and summer!
