STARS Program

Overview

The Summer Talent Academy for Rising Stars (STARS) Program supports selected high school seniors seeking admissions to Kutztown University.  The program is an on-campus five-week experience that provides two courses (six college-level credits), advising, academic support as well as social activities. The program is intended to support students in transitioning to college.  The program is rigorous - highly motivated and engaged students will get the most from this program. In 2018, up to 50 students will be in the STARS program.

Eligibility

STARS program students will be selected during the admissions process. Factors including high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores will be used to decide who is invited to the program.

Accepting the Offer to STARS

Students who are invited to join the program must accept the offer by submitting a $275 Advanced Registration Deposit (ARD). Note: Acceptance into to the program is on the first come basis. The first 50 students to accept the offer will be in the program.

Students who do not accept the offer to join the STARS program will not be admitted to Kutztown University for fall 2018.

Biology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Math, Psychology and all Education majors: STARS students who applied to KU in these majors majors have additional admissions requirements. Biology, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Math, Psychology and all Education majors who do not successfully meet the additional admissions requirements will be admitted as Exploratory Studies majors.

Art and Music majors: STARS students who applied to KU in these majors have additional admissions requirements:

  • Students seeking to major in Applied Digital Arts, Art Education, Art Education: Alternative Settings, Communication Design, Crafts and Studio Art must submit and pass a portfolio or art test via SlideRoom.
  • Students applying to the Commercial Music, Music, Music Education and Music Performance majors must schedule and pass an audition.

Art and Music majors who do not successfully complete the additional admissions requirements will be admitted as Exploratory Studies majors

Program Activities

Students in the STARS program are required to:

  • Take two college-level courses
  • Participate in student success and major exploration workshops
  • Engage in social activities designed to build a support network of peers
  • Meet periodically with professors, peer mentors and student success coordinators
  • Remain in good disciplinary standing before, during and after the program
  • During the program, reside in designated on-campus residence halls (Students who wish to seek an exception to this on-campus residency requirement are required to apply for and be granted permission to commute daily to campus).

Completion of the Program

STARS program students who achieve a 'C' grade or better in both courses will be able to pursue their studies at Kutztown University in the next semester (fall 2018). Students in the program who do not achieve a 'C' grade or better in both courses can pursue their studies at Kutztown University in the Spring 2019 semester if they attend their local community college and earn 12 or more college-level credits with a 2.0 or higher GPA.

July 7, 2018 - August 9, 2018

Program Costs

PA Residents: $3500 will cover tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and social activities

Non-PA Residents: $3603 will cover tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and social activities

Additionally, all students are required to submit a $275 non-refundable Advanced Registration Deposit.

Financial Aid

STARS students, if they qualify, can use federal financial aid to pay for all or a portion of the program costs. STARS students who want to use federal financial aid must submit their 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to June 1, 2018.

A representative from the KU Financial Aid Services Office has been assigned to help "STARS" students with financial aid questions at 610-683-4077.  Please identify yourself as a "STARS" student when you call.
