Tenure Track Position in Elementary Education (FDI Scholar)

Kutztown University of Pennsylvania enrolls approximately 8,000 students in graduate and undergraduate programs. The university is located in the borough of Kutztown in a charming rural setting, and is within 20 minutes driving time of the diverse metropolitan areas of Allentown/Bethlehem and Reading, and within 60 minutes of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Department of Elementary, Middle Level, Library and Technologies (EMLT) at Kutztown University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position under the Frederick Douglass Initiative (FDI) to begin Fall 2023. The FDI Scholars Program provides teaching and other professional experiences, mentoring, and employment within the departments of KU that are in need of qualified faculty committed to cultural and academic diversity. The proposed FDI Scholars Program will provide tenure track teaching opportunities to scholars who have earned doctoral degrees, or are in ABD status, and foster their growth and mentorship within Kutztown’s faculty, as well as supporting KU’s commitment to diversity.

FDI Scholars will receive mentoring support from the FDI Director, as well as a departmental/college mentor. They will participate in the development of programs, workshops, and activities supported by the Office of the Provost and organized through collaborations between the FDI and the Center for Engaged Learning. In recognition of this work, FDI Scholars will receive a course release in the spring semester during years one and two of their appointment.

In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, performance review and evaluation of faculty is based on effective teaching and fulfillment of professional responsibilities; continuing scholarly growth; and service. Required: a doctorate (ABD will be considered with evidence of completion by the start of the Fall 2023 semester) and master’s degree in education or a related area, and a minimum of 5 years of PreK-8th grade school experience including regular education classroom teaching experience in grades PreK-8. Evidence of expertise in culturally responsive/sustaining approaches, which may include presentations and publications. Experience with culturally and linguistically diverse communities within professional settings related to teaching children, experience teaching and working with English Language Learners required. Preferred: Experience teaching in higher education.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary and middle level education along with the supervision of teacher candidates in clinical placements. Successful interview and demonstration lesson required.
