Wi-Fi calling, or Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), lets you make voice calls using a Wi-Fi network rather than your carrier’s network. It's very helpful in locations that have fast Wi-Fi available, but not necessarily good cell phone service (like many of our residence halls).
Many students are already familiar with Skype, FaceTime and Facebook Messenger which let you make “calls” over a Wi-Fi network. True Wi-Fi calling is a bit different in that it’s native to the phone. In other words, there’s no need to open a third-party app — the phone automatically switches to Wi-Fi for voice calling if/when cell service drops.
