Preparing For Kutztown

Student at work in Computer lab

Registering for New Student Orientation is just the first step in coming to campus. Complete the following tasks before you start at KU. Doing these before arriving will enhance your orientation experience.

1). Take the Placement Assessments - Take these now, do not delay!

Please complete both online assessments 1-2 weeks before CONNECTIONS Orientation.

 A)  ALEKS Math Placement (Required*)
In order to register for a math course you must have an ALEKS score. The assessment will ask up to 30 questions. You should plan to complete the assessment in one 2-3 hour sitting.

You will need:

  • KU email address and password
  • A pencil and paper

*Students with transfer credits that have been evaluated and accepted to Kutztown as MAT 017, Introduction to Mathematics, have met this requirement and do not have to take the placement exam. If you are transferring into a major that requires more than introductory math, you must take the assessment.

Questions?  Visit the Math Placement website or contact Dr. Paul Ache, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, at math@kutztown.edu or 610-683-4410.

B) CAPE Language Placement: (Suggested) Earn up to 9 free credits!

Before enrolling in a French, German or Spanish course, unless you have no prior experience in the language, you should complete this diagnostic tool to evaluate your language skill level. This assessment will indicate the recommended level of the language you choose to study. If you place into and take a course at a level beyond 011 (renumbered 101 as of fall 2018) and pass with a C or better, you will get free credits (up to 9) for the previous levels.  Students who score high in the 104 range should contact the MLS department (nunez@kutztown.edu) to discuss the option of beginning at the 200 level.  Please note that free credits will not be awarded for students who do not complete the online diagnostic assessment or for skipped levels (e.g. students can't take 101 then 103 and receive free credits for 102).

The placement diagnostic typically takes less than 20 minutes depending on your level of fluency.

You will need:

      • Password: bears1
      • A printer to print the results of your exam
      • Take printed copy with you to CONNECTIONS

Questions? Visit the Language Placement website or contact Dr. Christine Núñez, Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, at nunez@kutztown.edu or 610-683-4427.

2)Activate Your KU Email

After paying the $275 Advance Registration Deposit, students will receive an official KU student email account. Activate this account right away. Read your email daily! You must know your account information for orientation. (ex. bzdra378@live.kutztown.edu and your password). You will use this to login to MyKU. Be prepared for orientation. Bring your cell phone and any questions you have. BearNet (the Wi-Fi service on campus) requires you to log in with your KU username and password.
