What are the Basic Skills exams?
The Basic Skills test series are required exams for licensure to teach in the State of Pennsylvania.
- CORE (Core Academic Skills for Educators) - Reading, Writing and Math www.ets.org
- PAPA (Pre-Service Academic Performance Assessment) - Reading, Writing, and Math www.pa.nesinc.com
- SAT/ACT option - Did you know that increasing your Reading, Writing/Language, and Math scores can give you a passing score for basic skills areas? www.actstudent.org or www.sat.collegeboard.org
Programs Offered:
EASE - Is a free structured program based on Basic Skills test objectives that include a variety of study resources and tips for Basic Skills test success.
MyLab* - Is a diagnostic tool used to assess strengths and vulnerabilities in the different content areas and develops an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) just for you!

Admission to Teacher Candidacy
(During the semester you will complete 48 credits)
- Achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA and maintain until you graduate
- Obtain "C" or better in:
- 3 hours of English Composition,
- 3 hours of English Literature
- 6 hours of Mathematics
- Pass the Basic Skills Tests (reading, writing, and math)
Basic Skills Testing Options (PAPA, CORE, SAT, and ACT: test codes and passing scores)
Educational Testing Services (ETS)
