Alaska Distance Intervention Program

The Alaska Distance Intervention Program is a program that provides tutoring to students in the Lake and Peninsula School District (LPSD) in Alaska.

Faculty from the Elementary Education Department at Kutztown University, as well as other colleges around the country, have collaborated with LPSD to create a program beneficial not only for the students in the school district, but also for teacher candidates. Through this program, select teacher candidates are paired with a student from LPSD and meet with them through an online distance learning tool, Blackboard Collaborate. The teacher candidates gain experience in using the student's intervention plan to inform their instruction during each tutoring session. Alaskan students receive individualized instruction from teacher candidates in the subjects and content areas that are defined in their intervention plans from LPSD. This program, though new to Kutztown University, has been a great success in preparing teacher candidates for a future career in education.

The Kutztown University program coordinator for the Distance Intervention program is Dr. Kristen Bazley.  Faculty and tutors have dedicated much time and effort in creating this meaningful opportunity for the teacher candidates in the Elementary Education Department.
