Dr. Andrew Miness

Biography: Andrew Miness earned his doctorate in Education Policy, with an emphasis on teaching and learning, from Michigan State University. In addition to six years teaching high school social studies, he most recently coached pre-service social studies teachers in their field placements in Lansing, Detroit, and Chicago. He also led methods courses rooted in critical literacy and powerful social studies instruction at MSU. His dissertation, “Exploring Overlap Between Michigan Lawmakers and Social Studies Policy Enactors in the Context of Public Act 4136,” sought to determine to what extent lawmakers, social studies teachers and administrators reveal shared or disparate positions in their orientations towards citizenship education. Dr. Miness is most inspired by engaging in research and teaching centered on what it means to prepare students for their democratic lives by empowering more active, non-traditional interpretations of civics education. He is energized to support Kutztown University’s pre-service secondary educators in their coursework and clinical experiences across SEU 312, 313, 325, and 390.
