Secondary Education Minor

The Department of Secondary Education has provided a pathway for students who are interested in Education but are not seeking a teaching certificate. This 18 credit program has an emphasis on social justice, which applies to many other areas of study and will give students an insight into the challenges that underserved schools face. 

Required Courses: 12 credits

  • EDU 100 Perspectives on American Education         
  • EDU 120 Hip Hop and Multicultural Education
  • EDU 150 Meeting Instruction Needs of English Language Learners
  • EDU 326 Introduction to Middle-Level education

Students Must choose 6 credits from the choices listed:

  • SPA 110 Spanish for Educators
  • SPU 201 Cognitive Development of Diverse Learners in a Standards Aligned System
  • ELU 221 Literature for Upper Elementary and Middle-Level Learners 
  • ITC 321 Instructional Technology in Education

English as a Second Language (ESL) Minor

The Department of Secondary Education has provided a pathway for students who are interested in teaching ESL. The Pennsylvania Department of Education lists ESL as the number one teacher shortage area in PA. In order to prepare educators to fill this shortage, Kutztown University's Department of Secondary Education offers a minor in ESL education. Candidates successfully completing this program are also eligible to receive the ESL Education Endorsement Certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education after receiving a Level I instructional certificate.

Integrative STEM Education Minor

The Department of Secondary Education has provided a pathway for students who are interested in teaching STEM. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) areas of education continue to be a focus around the globe. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes the need to ensure classroom teachers are equipped to inspire children to utilize their creativity, curiosity, and abilities to innovate. Candidates successfully completing this program are also eligible to receive the STEM Education Endorsement Certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education after receiving a Level I instructional certificate. 

Required Courses: 12 credits  

  • EDU 450: Foundations in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Education
  • EDU 452: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Pedagogy
  • EDU 454: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Skills

Application and Assessment

  • EDU 456: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Learning

Seminar Elective Courses: 6 credits  

  • Any lab or non-lab course (100 level or higher) with prefix AST, BIO, CHM, ENV, GEL, MAR, or PHY
  • Any course (100 level or higher) with prefix MAT, ITC, CSC, or EGR
