Summer Institutes

2020 CEPA SUMMER INSTITUTES

The Summer Institutes for Art Educators are held in the summer months that correspond to public school summer vacation schedules. The Institutes provide intensive one to two week instruction in art education and related fields of study. While art education and visual studies courses meet for one week, studio courses may run for two weeks. The Institutes connect students with community resources and visiting artist/scholars. The Institutes are designed to provide in-depth experiences that are unavailable through regular coursework.

Registration begins on March 16, 2020

Registration ends one week prior to the start of the Institute. No refunds will be given after the start of class.

Non-credit registrations are limited.

Workshops are for ACT 48 hours only.
Online courses are three graduate credits.

This workshop will cover many facets of casting, from plaster, resin, pewter to bronze and sterling silver. Simple carving and mold making will be addressed. The online portion of the class will delve into the history of cast objects and the impact of mass production of objects in our world. The class will also address modifying techniques to be brought into a K-12 classroom through studio processes and facilitation by guest artists.

ARU 556: Reflective Practice: A Tool for Teaching and Learning

In this interactive workshop, discover ways in which to use reflective practice as a tool for professional and artistic growth in partnership with your learners. Engage in reflective and artistic encounters aimed at examining how, what and why you teach. Building from sustained reflective journaling and engaged dialog with colleagues, we will explore professional practice in the 21st century. Art teachers lead very busy lives – this four-day institute provides ample opportunities to deeply engage in holistic approaches to wellness. The institute will include a field trip, motivational speakers, interactive presentations, workshops and studio encounters.

ARU 575: Building Your Creative Practice: Methods, Strategies and Tactics

This workshop/project course is designed to help you jump start and/or reinvigorate your studio practice. Using experimental invention and discovery methods from a wide range of practitioners you’ll explore ways of making your studio your favorite place again.

ARU 542:  Book Arts as Activism

In this workshop, participants will develop a foundational knowledge of form, structure and content through the creation of traditional and non-traditional book forms. Knowledge developed in the course will inform an individual project using art- based research. Participants will have the choice to develop a series of books with a social justice theme or curriculum that uses book structures to provide learners with social justice topics. Online course work will provide opportunities to understand culturally relevant pedagogy. The institute will include a field trip, interactive presentations, guest book artist & and studio encounters.

Dates listed are workshop face to face portion—online portion for credit includes online work before and after workshop dates.
