Kutztown University Film Festival

Kutztown University Film Festival (KUFF) provides an exciting opportunity for Pennsylvania high school filmmakers to screen their creative work on the Kutztown University campus. We know how much work goes into your films and want to celebrate that effort. Hosted by the Cinema, Television and Media Production department, the one-day festival includes a screening, followed by filmmaker Q + A’s, and an awards ceremony.

It is an extraordinary time in the history of media arts. For those of you who are drawn to the power of this medium for artistic expression, you’ve come to the right place. SFI is designed to provide an intense and rewarding introduction to the ever-evolving world of digital filmmaking. Our exceptional teaching faculty and staff are very excited to see your creations!

THE INSTITUTE—6/23—6/28/2019 - Check-in will be 6/23 for the resident campers, the official first day of the camp is 6/24 @ 9 a.m. (Commuters will start on the 24th @ 9 a.m. with all of the campers)

The Summer Filmmaking Institute (SFI) at Kutztown offers students, of all ages, an introduction to the theories and techniques of digital movie making. Working with state-of-the-art technology, students will design, shoot and edit films of their own creation. Projects focus on equipment and video graphic techniques. Each student will produce their own film and contribute to a larger scale production. The days will include lectures, equipment training, production, editing, and screenings. At the end of the program, the final films are celebrated in a festival screening open to invited guests.

Tentative Agenda:

Kutztown University- Summer Filmmaking Institute

Day 1 - Learn how to use a professional video camera and associated equipment. Learn how to utilize video cameras to make your film look like what you are envisioning!

Day 2 – Brainstorm! Visualize your movie. Learn how to tell a story effectively! Storyboarding, shot lists, location scouting and getting ready to shoot- Learn what to do to prepare for shooting and the film set. You will also learn how to work successfully on a film crew.

Day 3 – Film it. Students will get into film crews and learn how to direct a film, as well as work other positions on a film set. How to prepare for post-production.  Get to know professional Editing software.

Day 4 – Wrap filming. Learn what it takes to edit a film to its final form on state of the art Mac computers and professional industry software.

Day 5 – Polish, export and view our projects. We will have a screening celebration in our plush cinema auditorium.

Invite family and friends!!!

Each student will finish the program with two completed projects that can be used in their filmmaking reel/portfolio.


-We will go into the new state-of-the-art KUTV production truck to see how a Live video production works.

-We will discuss the possibilities of life making movies and a possible career in video and/or broadcast.

-Students will have the experience of attending a film screening of their films, where they will show their work- filmmakers will be introduced and participate in a Q&A session with the audience!!

A week of hard work and fun that will enable you to make your filmmaking aspirations a reality.
