Vocal Ensembles

Choir Collage

The Kutztown University Department of Music offers a wide variety of choral music opportunities. Students perform twice annually in major concert venues, usually in the newly-renovated 826-seat Schaeffer Auditorium, as well as in performances at schools and other venues around the region. Singers may choose from large and small ensembles and all styles, periods, levels of difficulty, and genres of music. Membership is open to everyone. Students from all majors across the campus as well as community members join vocal music majors and music majors whose primary instrument is something other than voice. There is no audition requirement for membership in University Choir, just a desire to sing and to learn to develop one's singing skills. An audition for the other ensembles is required. Music sight-reading skill is helpful but not necessary. Ability to sing in tune with good tone quality and hold your own part is essential.

Members of the KU choral program participate in the annual PCCA (Pennsylvania Collegiate Choral Association) Festival that is held at various locations throughout the Commonwealth. Singers from approximately a dozen PA colleges and university choral programs gather for a three-day festival under the direction of a nationally or internationally renowned guest conductor to perform challenging choral repertoire in a non-competitive setting.  Students may choose from these ensembles in our program:

University Choir is a large traditional concert choral ensemble. It performs music of all eras, from ancient to contemporary, both a cappella and with instrumental accompaniment, including major works for chorus and full symphony orchestra. No audition is required.

Chamber Singers is a smaller traditional "madrigal" style group. Its repertoire focuses mainly on a cappella music of all eras, but particularly Renaissance and early Baroque classical small ensemble music.

Bear Voices focuses on "pop" music, both a cappella and accompanied.

After Hours performs vocal jazz, usually with a small instrumental combo.

A student-run group called Kutztones sings recent contemporary pieces arranged by student members of the group.
