B.A. Music (Performance)

The B.A. in Music Performance allows students to gain a well-rounded education while concentrating on improving their playing. Students will be prepared to further their studies at graduate school if desired. This degree will provide training in a broad range of skills required of modern-day musicians within the context of traditional and contemporary practices. Students are expected to develop a high level of technical proficiency to excel in their area of musical performance.

Performance students will take additional semesters of private lessons with artist faculty, participate in wide range of large and small ensembles, and complete a composition course where they will compose works to be performed in a new music ensemble. In addition, students will take a professional musician course and a lab course that incorporates movement, improvisation, and musician's health. They will participate in studio performance seminars where they will perform for their peers in a supportive atmosphere. Students will also have the opportunity to work with guest artists and perform in recitals both on and off campus.

Our students have performed in New York City at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. They have also performed abroad in Italy, France, Puerto Rico, and Thailand. Elective courses may be taken in areas such as audio engineering, music business, private studio teaching, composition, music education, music history, analysis, or additional performance ensembles. Students in this program can also pursue a double major or a minor. Upon graduation, students will have the foundation to pursue a graduate degree.
