Degree Requirements

Designed specifically for working professionals the M.Ed. in Music Education (starting in Fall 2017) can be completed fully online and provides students with the flexibility needed to balance work, school, and personal obligations. Within a 30 graduate credit-hour structure, the Master of Education in Music Education includes advanced work in several areas including:

Foundations of Music Education

  • Advanced Foundations of Music Education
  • Instructional Systems Design and Learning Processes in Music
  • Methods of Research
  • Graduate Seminar

Music Foundation Courses

  • Advanced Musical Analysis
  • Advanced Musicology Study
  • Technology for the Music Educator


Students may choose any nine elective course credits to increase their breadth of knowledge. Students also may choose to study privately or perform in ensembles for credit at KU or a more local institution. Students will be able to apply knowledge in areas inside and outside of music to the changing world of arts and education. The program is designed to be completed within two years.
