Study Abroad Experience - Mark McTague

By Erin Meitzler '11

When Mark McTague spent a month in China during high school, he was eager for a chance to return. With the help of Kutztown University's Study Abroad program directors, he completed the application for the College Consortium of International Studies (CCIS) and was on his way.

Studying at Nanjing University in the Jiangsu Province, McTague lived life the Chinese way. A small thing like having lunch with a friend's family was a chance to expand his horizons.

"The experience showed me how people in China both treat guests and how they live. Eating with them, and going to a local park with their daughter, who is in Kindergarten, was fun and very interesting," he said.

He learned many lessons during his travels, the most important being about the people he met.

"There are many different people with many different views on life, and no one way of living is either right or wrong."

McTague recommends studying abroad to everyone.

"Studying abroad lets you personally experience the many different people and cultures around the world," he said.  "It helps you to better understand the differences in societies that can lead to misunderstandings."
