College of Education Scholarships

Note: Criteria for each scholarship are determined by donors and recipients are chosen by each department. Since some scholarships may be renewed by the current scholarship holder, not all listed scholarships are available every year. Scholarship applicants will be considered for all available opportunities for which they are qualified, following acceptance to the university and program of study (if applicable). Students are also encouraged to view additional opportunities available through the Admissions, Athletics, College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Visual and Performing ArtsFinancial Aid, Freshman, Honors, and Miscellaneous scholarship categories.

A.C. Rothermel '21 Scholarship

Established by the estate of Janice P. Rothermel in memory of Mabel Rothermel Nimmo, class of 1900, Florence Rothermel Bowly, class of 1902, Ruth Brensinger Rothermel, class of 1910, and Samuel H. Rothermel, class of 1906. To provide financial assistance to students who plan to pursue a career in the teaching profession. Eligible students must be graduates of high schools in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and demonstrate financial need.

Brian K. Harwick Memorial Scholarship

Given annually since 1984 by Stanley C. (emeritus professor of education) and Susan Harwick in memory of their nephew, Brian K. Harwick, to students majoring in special education.

Charles A. and Joyce Kutz Wehr Scholarship

Established by Joyce Kutz Wehr '46 in memory of her husband Charles and in celebration of their life together to provide scholarship assistance to a student majoring in elementary or secondary education, who exhibits the qualities of academic excellence necessary to be a successful teacher in today's environment.

Clara Dyer Coleman '27, '35 Library Science Scholarship

Established by Clara Dyer Coleman '27 and '35 to recognize the achievement and commitment of a junior or senior student majoring in library science who is full-time and committed to a career in library service.

College of Education Dean's Scholarship

Established by the dean of the College of Education to provide scholarships to incoming freshman education majors from gifts given to the College of Education Fund.

Craig R. Holtzman and Jacob D. Holtzman Scholarship

Established by Neil and Marion Holtzman '62 in memory of their son, Craig R. Holtzman, and grandson, Jacob D. Holtzman, to provide scholarship assistance to a student of good character majoring in Special Education. Preference given to students who have been diagnosed as having a learning disability.

Diana DeRagon Buchman Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Diana DeRagon Buchman (assistant director of Housing and Residence Life) by her family, friends and colleagues to provide scholarship assistance to a resident student majoring in education.

Dora Hadley '29 & Edward E. Barr Senior Scholarship

Established in memory of Dora Hadley Barr '29 and Edward E. Barr, Sr. by family and friends to provide merit scholarships for junior elementary education majors who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, involvement in student life, and participation in the community outreach activities of Kutztown University.

Dr. Carl J. Daeufer Scholarship in Teacher Education

Established by Dr. Carl J. Daeufer '53 to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement by a sophomore, junior or senior from Pennsylvania who is majoring in either elementary or secondary education and whose goal is to teach.  The student must be in good academic standing with preference given to a member of the women's or men's basketball team.

Dr. Jorie Borden Memorial Scholarship

Established by the Borden family and friends in memory of Dr. Jorie Borden, professor of elementary education, to provide scholarship assistance to a non-traditional student majoring in elementary education.

Dr. Ralph A. Fritz Memorial Scholarship

Established by Lolita R. Fritz Binford, Marcia Kay Fritz Hartman, and Miriam Jolee Fritz Robinson through the estate of their mother, Dr. Roletta O. Jolly-Fritz, in memory of Dr. Ralph A. Fritz (professor emeritus and former director of library education), to provide scholarships to students majoring in library science, who show enthusiasm for teaching, have leadership potential, a GPA above 3.0, and have contributed to the library science program in general.

Dr. Ralph Abner Fritz Scholarship

Established anonymously in memory of Dr. Ralph Abner Fritz, professor of library science from 1946-1955 to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy library science major.

Edith Mellner Education Scholarship

Established by Edith Mellner (emerita associate professor of health and physical education) to recognize the academic promise of an elementary education major.

Edwin and Jeanne Miller Scholarship

Established by Jeanne Snyder Miller '51 in honor of her marriage to Edwin Miller '53, and in recognition of his career as a librarian, to provide a scholarship to a worthy student majoring in library science.

Elaine M. Smith Elementary Education Scholarship

Established by Samuel P. Smith '43 (former president of Kutztown University Foundation) in memory of his wife, Elaine M. Smith '44, to recognize an  elementary education major who best demonstrates excellence in the professional semester experience.

Anthony Friedman and Hermine Vrana Friedman Endowed Scholarship

Established by Frank A. Friedman in honor of his parents, Anthony and Hermine Vrana Friedman to recognize students majoring in secondary education and preparing to teach social studies/geography.

Georgiana Weaver Jackson '33 Memorial Fund

Established by the estate of Georgiana W. Jackson '33 to provide scholarship assistance to an incoming freshman majoring in elementary education.

Helen E. Ambrogio '70 Memorial Scholarship

Established by Barbara '74 and David McFarland (tenth President of the University) in memory of Barbara's mother, Helen E. Ambrogio '70, to provide scholarship assistance to a non-traditional student in recognition of Mrs. Ambrogio's determination to achieve a life long dream to complete her degree after raising six daughters. Awarded to a non-traditional student majoring in education.

Katherine D. Christ '26 Award

Established by the estate of Katherine D. Christ '26 (elementary education professor), to provide scholarships for students preparing for a career in elementary education.

John Holingjak, Jr. '56 Scholarship

Established by John Holingjak Jr. '56 to provide scholarships for students from Montgomery, Chester, or Berks counties who demonstrate academic potential and are majoring in secondary education/biology.

Joy S. Helm '62, '71 Scholarship

Established in memory of Joy S. Helm '62 and '71 by James C. Helm (husband), family, and friends to provide a scholarship to a deserving non-traditional student who has completed at least 30 credit hours and is in the teacher education program.

Lillian C. Hartman '23, '24 Scholarship

Established by Lillian C. Hartman '23 and '34 to provide scholarships to an incoming freshman majoring in education. Eligible students will be a first year student with a 3.0 GPA. 

Lillian E. Johnson 1889 Scholarship

Established by the estate of Mary Elise Johnson in memory of her sister, Lillian E. Johnson, former dean of women, to support a teacher education major with a 3.5 GPA, and demonstrates financial need.

Linda Rose Fuellenbach '57 Memorial Scholarship

Established by Rose Fuellenbach (mother) and friends in memory of Linda Rose Fuellenbach '57 to provide scholarships to library science majors (junior, senior, and graduate students) with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Mary E. Kramer Sophomore Scholarship in Special Education

Established by the estate of Mary E. Kramer '33 to recognize a worthy full-time sophomore student with financial need who has demonstrated the ability and attitude to excel as a teacher of special education.  Recipient must have earned at least 32 credits but less than 64.

Mary Grace Wible Art Education Endowed Scholarship

Established in memory of Mary Grace Wible, retired art education professor at KU, as a bequest of her estate to provide a scholarship to a freshman Pennsylvania resident student of financial need, majoring in art education.

Michelle Shinsky Mason '73 Scholarship

Established by John and Michelle Mason '73 to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy full-time secondary education student majoring in science.

Myrtle Stofflet Keener Memorial Scholarship

Established by Robert E. Clark Sr. and Lucille Keener Clark to honor the teaching record and dedication of her mother, Myrtle Stofflet Keener. Eligible students will be elementary education majors with financial need who maintain a part-time job of at least 10 hours per week.

Naomi Evangeline Dietrich Long 1919 Scholarship

Established by Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Harley (daughter) in memory of Naomi Dietrich Long '19 to provide scholarships to freshman students meeting the following criteria: leadership potential, involvement in performing arts (music), character, responsibility, dependability, enthusiasm for teaching, performance in elementary education courses, attitude toward profession, contribution to elementary education program in general, serious financial need, who are majoring in elementary education.

Nicholas G. Stevens Scholarship

Established by Mrs. Elizabeth Stevens (wife) and the Library Science Department in memory of Nicholas G. Stevens to provide a scholarship to an entering freshman majoring in library science, and a scholarship to an entering freshman who will be a football player. Eligible students will be a first year student pursuing a major in Library Science, be a freshman on the football team, who demonstrate financial need, and is entering KU with a predicted GPA of 2.5.

Phyllis Booth Shone Presidential Scholarship

Given by Phyllis Booth Shone '50 in memory of her mother, Helen Bardill Booth, class of 1914, to underwrite a continuing four-year full-tuition scholarship to a new freshman majoring in education who has demonstrated exceptional academic performance and community involvement.

Ray and Marjorie Sunderland Scholarship

Established by Dr. Ray Sunderland (emeriti director of student teaching and professor of education) and Marjorie Sunderland '74 to provide scholarship aid to education majors who will student teach in England, Scotland or Wales.

Robert '67 and Barbara '67 Bennett Scholarship

Established by Robert '67 and Barbara '67 Bennett to provide financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at Kutztown University. Applicants must be pursuing a major in the College of Education. Preference will be given to students from the Lehigh Valley area.

S. Eleanor Ruth Brossman Scholarship

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Martin Brossman in memory of Sallie Eleanor Ruth Brossman, class of 1908, to provide scholarships to junior or senior female students majoring in elementary education with a concentration in early childhood education.

Sean Christopher Cieri Scholarship

Established in loving memory of Sean Christopher Cieri by his family and friends to provide scholarship assistance to a student majoring in secondary education or communication studies.

Shawn Moser Zdancewicz '96 Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship shall be to provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the College of Education at Kutztown University in honor of Emmaus High School and Kutztown University graduate Shawn Moser Zdancewicz.

Tara Marie Koshinski Memorial Scholarship

Established by Daniel and Mary Koshinski, friends, family and employees of Computer Aid, Inc. in loving memory of Tara to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy elementary education major.

Wayne C. Rush '74 Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for students enrolled or planning to enroll at KU, pursuing a degree a degree in the Dept. of Library and Learning Technology and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Preference given to an applicant who resides in NJ and second preference given to a graduate of a community college.

William P. Wewer '42 Scholarship

Established by William P. Wewer '42, to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy student majoring in special education/visually impaired program.

William U. and Mary A. Gabel Scholarship

Established by E. Margaret Gabel '50 in memory of her parents, William U. and Mary A. Gabel, to provide scholarship assistance to a female student majoring in library science.

John Emerick '59 Direct Library Science Scholarship

Established by John Emerick '59 to be given to a worthy library science undergraduate or graduate student. Selection will be based on a procedure determined by the faculty committee.

Cecelia Mobley D'Annibale '75 Scholarship in Library Science

Established in memory of Cecelia Mobley D'Annibale. Awarding this scholarship will be based on financial need and given to a junior or senior majoring in library science and in good standing.

Jean M. Shapcott Memorial Scholarship

Established by Martha Anne and Harry Shapcott in memory of their daughter, Jean M. Shapcott.  Applicants must be pursuing a major in the College of Education, have graduated from Bristol High School in Bristol, PA, and have demonstrated financial need.

Ronald D. '70 and Catherine '70 Mordosky Scholarship

Established by Ronald D. '70 and Catherine '70 Mordosky to provide financial assistance to students who are planning on majoring in education and be part of the teacher preparation program.

Scott '70 and Paula Wehr Scholarship

Awarded to undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at KU.  Eligible students must be pursuing a teaching degree within the College of Education, must be an elementary education major, maintain candidacy status in the teacher prep program, and demonstrate financial need.

Morell D. Boone '64 Library Science Direct Scholarship

Awarded to an incoming freshman enrolled, or planning to enroll, at KU in the Library Science Program. The student shall maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Graduate students may also be considered.

Cyrus E. Beekey Scholarship

Established by a gift from the Beekey family and friends in memory of Cyrus E. Beekey (served college from 1943-1969) to provide scholarships to juniors or seniors who are majoring in secondary education.

Anna Elda Hammes Gross 1915 Scholarship

Established in memory of Anna Elda Hammes Gross 1915 by her family to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy elementary education major, with preference given to a student with a music concentration.

Dr. Karen Weaver '63 Coleman Scholarship

Established by Dr. Karen Weaver Coleman '63 to recognize an outstanding upper-class student who has earned 65 credits and is working towards a degree in secondary education.

Sandra Steimling Roth '66 Scholarship

Established by Charles F. Roth, Jr. in loving memory of his wife, Sandra Steimling Roth, to provide scholarship support to an elementary education major at Kutztown University who demonstrates financial need.

Alma Gable Degler '28 Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Alma Gable Degler '28 by her son, Stanley E. Degler, in recognition of her dedication and commitment to teaching and to provide scholarship assistance to incoming freshmen majoring in elementary education.

Gale Dalla Piazza Kohler '64 Endowed Scholarship

Established by Gary Kohler and Anne Drennan in memory of Gale Dalla Piazza Kohler '64 to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy secondary education student majoring in math or science.

Kermit K. and Virginia '38 Lerch Kleintop KSTC Endowment

Established by Virginia Lerch Kleintop, KSTC Class of 1938, in memory of her husband, Kermit K. Kleintop to provide scholarship assistance to a student majoring in elementary education.

Marjorie H. Sunderland Memorial Scholarship

Established by the estate of Marjorie H Sunderland and her children to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy elementary education major.

John H. '49 and Madalynne M. '31, '47 Evans Scholarship

Established by John H. '49 and Madalynne M. '47 Evans to provide scholarship aid to students majoring in education. High School GPA may not exceed 3.5. 

Dr. Dennis C. '66 and Nanci A. '69 Blankowitsch Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Dennis C. and Nanci A. Blankowitsch. Applicants must be enrolled or admitted to KU, be pursuing a major in early childhood or elementary education, and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

George M. Wentzel '40 Education Endowed Scholarship

Established by Robert C. and Sharon E. Landis to honor the memory of Sharon's grandfather, George M. Wentzel. Eligible students are undergraduates who demonstrate financial need, are pursuing a major in the College of Education, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Wilson-Brown Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Florence Brown Webber '24, Guy Brown '32, Roy A. Brown '41, Bernice Webber Wilson '49 and Paul Wilson '49 to be awarded to a student majoring in elementary education, library science or art education with a GPA of 3.0.

Gladys M. Shafer '44 Miller and Clifford F. Miller Endowed Scholarship

The recipient will be an incoming first-year, full-time, undergraduate student with a projected GPA of at least 3.0, majoring in elementary education, and demonstrating financial need.

Doris H. Burkhart Endowed Scholarship for Early Childhood Education

Undergraduate enrolled in Elementary Education who demonstrates financial need and maintains a 2.5 GPA.

Brubaker Endowed Scholarship

Established by Diane L. Brubaker, emerita, to provide recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled or planning to enroll in KU. Consideration will be given to students pursuing a degree in pre-k-4 elementary education, be a sophomore, junior or senior, and maintain a 3.2 GPA. Preference will be given to a first generation college student.

Russell and Marilynn Kershner '55, '74 Schanely and Katie Hanchuruck '09 Endowed Award

Majoring in library science who has achieved excellence in academics and has also emulated Marilynn Kerschner Schanely, B.S. 1955, M.S. 1974, and Katie Hanchuruck, B.S. 2009 with outstanding community service.

Anthony J. Mazzaferri History Scholarship

Given in memory of Dr. Anthony J. Mazzaferri, former professor of history, by Dr. Annette Mazzaferri (wife and emerita professor of speech and theatre) to provide scholarship support to an outstanding junior or senior student majoring in secondary education with a concentration or major in social sciences or history. Eligible students need a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in at least 15 hours of history coursework completed at KU.

William C. Kreitz '69 & Carol J. Smith Kreitz '68 Scholarship

Established by William C. Kreitz '69 and Carol J. Smith Kreitz '68 to provide financial support to two outstanding students, one from the College of Education (elementary education major) and one from the College of Business.

Sean Christopher Cieri Scholarship

Established in loving memory of Sean Christopher Cieri by his family and friends to provide scholarship assistance to a student majoring in secondary education or communication studies.

Jeanne and Jacob Esser Family Endowed Scholarship

Established in memory of Jeanne Esser by her children. Applicants must be enrolled or admitted to KU, demonstrate financial need, and must demonstrate successful academic performance. First preference will be given to applicants pursuing a major in early childhood education; second preference will be given to applicants pursuing a degree in one of the visual or performing arts.

Daniel Hinkel Family Endowed Wrestling Scholarship

Established by Dan Hinkel, professor, wrestling coach (1964-1996) and KU Hall of Famer, to provide the wrestling program with a permanent source of scholarship income. Eligible students must be a KU wrestler accepted into the College of Education.

The Ramona M. McIntyre Memorial Scholarship

Established by the McIntyre family in memory of the late Ramona M. McIntyre, to provide the women's basketball, field hockey, softball, or volleyball programs with a permanent source of scholarship income. Eligible students must be a member of women's basketball, field hockey, softball or volleyball teams and has been officially accepted in the College of Education as a Secondary Education major.

Dorothy Clauser Moyer '59 Scholarship

Established by elementary education emerita, former KU coach, and alumnae Professor Dorothy C. Moyer of Naples, FL and Pottsville, PA, for the purpose of scholarship support for a female scholar-athlete majoring in education.
