College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Scholarships

Note: Criteria for each scholarship are determined by donors and recipients are chosen by each department. 

Carl and Regina Brunner Scholarship

Established by Dr. Carl (dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) and Dr. Regina (assistant to the provost) Brunner to recognize an outstanding full-time, incoming freshman student with a 3.0 GPA working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in physical sciences, biology or math through the College of Liberal Arts.

David and Charlotte Valuska Endowed Internship for Pennsylvania German Studies

Established by David and Charlotte Valuska to provide a stipend for students selected to be interns engaged in the study and preservation of the Pennsylvania German culture. Eligible students must be selected for an internship at the PA German Society located at the PA German Heritage Center at KU, or alternate organization, and be registered for at least 3 semester hours of credit for the internship.

W.W. Deatrick Centennial Scholarship

Established in memory of W.W. Deatrick, retired professor, to provide scholarships for junior or senior students who are worthy, ambitious and conscientious, majoring in English and preparing to teach. Eligible students must have completed at least 60 credits and demonstrate financial need.

Emma Richards-Bausch Scholarship

Established by Emma Richards-Bausch to provide a scholarship to an incoming freshman or transfer student with financial need who will pursue a major in the English department and has demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for a major in English/general, English/professional writing, or secondary education/English.

Hearst Foundation Scholarship

Established by a grant from the Hearst Foundation to provide annual scholarships to two students: one majoring in English professional writing, and one majoring in electronic media.

Rosalyn Ensminger/Geography Endowment Fund

Established by family and friends of Rosalyn Ensminger and the Geography Department to provide scholarships to geography students.

Sadie Kutz and Nancy Henderson Scholarship

Established by Joyce Kutz Wehr '46 in memory of her mother, Sadie Kutz '20, and her daughter, Nancy J. Henderson '70, in recognition of the 75th and 25th anniversaries of their graduations. Eligible students should be an outstanding Math or Computer Science student.

Joshua Wentworth Wesner Pre-Medical Scholarship

Established in memory of Joshua Wentworth Wesner, pre-medical student, advocate for the disabled and contributor to the Kutztown University community, by his family, friends, and the alumni, staff and faculty of Kutztown University. The scholarship is intended to help the university to attract, acknowledge, support and retain pre-medical students who will go on to become doctors who care deeply about people, and who make a difference in their communities. This was Josh's dream for himself. Eligible students must be an incoming biology student planning to attend medical school.

Ruth Bonner Scholarship Fund

Established by Ruth Bonner '21 to provide scholarship aid to a full-time student with financial need who is majoring in English. Preference will be given to students in teacher education, have completed at least 90 credits and have maintained a GPA of 3.5.

Linda Oswald-Bogert Scholarship

Established in memory of Linda Oswald-Bogert (former administrative assistant in Modern Languages), to provide scholarships to students enrolled in foreign language. The recipient will be an incoming freshman student desiring to major in modern languages.

Anthony J. Mazzaferri History Scholarship

Given in memory of Dr. Anthony J. Mazzaferri, former professor of History, by Dr. Annette Mazzaferri (wife and emerita professor of speech and theatre) to provide scholarship support to an outstanding junior or senior student majoring in Secondary Education with a concentration or major in Social Sciences or History. Eligible students need a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in at least 15 hours of History coursework completed at KU.

Ralph J. and Margaret H. Deisher Scholarship Fund

Established by Dr. Caroline I. Anderson '65 (daughter) in memory of Ralph J. and Margaret H. Deisher to provide scholarships for freshmen who are graduates of either Berks or Lehigh county high schools and are majoring in mathematics, the sciences or pre-theology.

Physical Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Established by the faculty in the Physical Sciences Department to recognize an outstanding student working toward a BS in Physical Sciences and who has a minimum of 30 credits earned at KU.

Karl F. Walter Scholarship Fund

Established by members of the Physical Science Department in honor of Karl F. Walter (emeriti professor of physical science), to provide scholarships to freshman physical science majors.

Dr. Roger S. Whitcomb International Student Scholarship

Established by Dr. Roger S. Whitcomb, emeritus professor of political science, to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy international student studying political science or public administration. Eligible students must have earned 27 credits, six of which must come from the Department of Political Science and must carry an overall GPA of 2.5, including a 3.0 GPA in the department.

Jaymie B. Creitz Scholarship

Established in loving memory of Jaymie B. Creitz by her maternal grandparents, Walter and Ellen Faryniak to recognize and encourage a student who has demonstrated resilient determination to earn a college degree. The scholarship will be awarded to a female student majoring in psychology, who has earned 21 credits in extended learning and who has membership in an organization benefiting animal welfare and also demonstrates involvement in either M.A.D.D. or S.A.D.D.

Alex J. '58 and Paige Pogirski Scholarship

Established by Carol Pogirski Carzon '57 in memory of her late husband and daughter to encourage female students to major in science and to recognize outstanding academic achievement. To be eligible a female student must be majoring in an area of science, earning a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Ronald R. Rhein Biology Scholarship

Established by faculty, emeriti, staff, alumni and friends of the Biology Department in honor of the long productive career of Dr. Ronald R. Rhein, and in appreciation for Dr. Rhein's commitment to the quality of education at Kutztown University. Eligible students will be a biological science major with at least 30 credits, at least 3.0 GPA and involved in extracurricular activities/service for the Biology Department and/or the University.

Ronald L. Marburger '61 Scholarship

Established by Ronald R. Marburger '61 to provide scholarship assistance to a worthy incoming freshman Math or Computer Science major. Preference will be given to a student from Pottstown High School.

C.R. Chambliss Scholarship Fund

Established by C.R. Chambliss, Ph.D., emeritus professor of astronomy in the department of physical sciences to provide scholarship aid to students majoring in chemistry, physics, physics/engineering, geology, marine science or any physical science combined with secondary education.

David Chalmer Bailey '02 Scholarship

Established by Thomas and Carol Bailey and Boyd and Anne Epperson in memory of their son and nephew, David Chalmer Bailey '02, a truly remarkable young man, avid rugby enthusiast, and world traveler, to provide scholarship assistance to students who love children, demonstrate a fascination with people, and pursuing a major in sociology or social work.

Patrick J. Duddy, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Patrick J. Duddy Jr. by his parents, emeritus professor of biology Patrick J. Duddy Sr. '69 and Cynthia A. Duddy '87, and family and friends to provide scholarship assistance to a student majoring in biology/secondary education who has completed at least 60 credits. Preference given to a graduate of Fleetwood, Kutztown, or Brandywine high schools.

Ruth B. deFrancesco Scholarship in Modern Language

Established by a bequest from Ruth B. deFrancesco to provide annual scholarships to first year students in modern language studies.

Emily Haring Chemistry Scholarship

Created by Emily Haring to provide recognition and financial assistance to students enrolled or planning to enroll as a chemistry major.

Howard and Leah Landis Memorial Scholarship in Spanish for Modern Business

Established in memory of Howard and Leah Landis to assist outstanding students who are complementing their major field of study with the Spanish for Modern Business Minor. Eligible students will demonstrate financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Carmen and Gabriel Cevallos Latin American Studies Scholarship

Established in memory of Dr. Gabriel Cevallos, father of former KU president Dr. F. Javier Cevallos. The recipient must demonstrate an interest in Latin American studies as evidenced by course work in modern languages, history, or other relevant fields.

Rick Dillen Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics

Established by Rick Dillen to provide scholarships to undergraduate students are pursuing a Mathematics degree in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and demonstrate financial need.

Donald L. Miller '53 Undergraduate Scholarship

Established by Donald L. Miller '53 to continue his legacy of helping the entering freshman achieve his/her goals by providing scholarship assistance to worthy students. Must be a freshman from Berks County, other than natural or physical science majors.

Keystone Newswriting Scholarship

Established by the English Department faculty to recognize a student with outstanding skill and who has made a contribution as an explanatory/exploratory reporter for the Keystone college newspaper through an article or series of articles published in the Keystone during the academic year.

Walter Nott Memorial Fund

Established by the friends and family of Dr. Walter Nott, this scholarship seeks to provide support for a student majoring in English. Eligible students must be a full-time student entering into his/her senior year, pursuing a major in English and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Tibbits/Watrous Environmental Science Scholarship

Established anonymously by a non-traditional student alumnus to recognize and encourage a student majoring in environmental science who demonstrates financial need. Eligible students must be at least 24 years of age who carries at least 9 credits, maintains a 2.5 GPA, and has completed 75 credits, at least 30 of which at KU, is in an environmental science major and has demonstrated involvement in a KU student organization.

Esther M. Willits Scholarship

Established to provide financial assistance to a worthy student who is pursuing a degree in History.

Joshua Kortze '10 Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship shall be to provide recognition and financial support to an outstanding sophomore, junior or senior enrolled at KU. Applicants must be pursuing a major in Political Science and carrying a GPA of 2.8.

Mary Mobley St. John '62 Direct Scholarship in Marine Science/Geography

Established to provide recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding senior or junior undergraduate currently enrolled in KU, maintaining a 3.0 GPA and majoring in Marine Science or Geography.

Katherine E. Babb '32, '36 Geography Scholarship

Established through a bequest of the estate of Katherine Babb and designed to support a National Merit Scholar pursuing a degree in Geography.

Kauffman Family Endowed Scholarship for Science and Mathematics

Established to provide scholarship assistance to a student currently pursuing a degree in Biology, Physical Science, or Mathematics. The student will demonstrate successful academic performance and maintain a 3.0 overall GPA.

Electronic Media Alumni Scholarship

Established by Christopher M. Murphy '95 for the purpose of providing scholarship support to a student majoring in Electronic Media at KU. Eligible students will have completed 60 overall credits, with 15 of those credits being within the Electronic Media major.

Dr. Walter Nott English Scholarship

Awarded to a full-time student majoring in English and entering into his/her senior year. GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need and intend to continue his or her course of study upon graduation from KU.

Charles '54 and Betty Hewes '57 Grebey Scholarship

Established through the estates of Charles and Betty Grebey to provide scholarship assistance to freshman student majoring in mathematics, sciences, or library science.

Russell C. Trexler '31 and Stella V. Trexler '30 Memorial Scholarship

Established by the estates of Russell C. Trexler '31 and Stella V. Trexler '30 to provide scholarship assistance to students majoring in elementary education, mathematics or history.
