Withdrawal

Withdrawal / Refund Policy is broken up into 2 different categories. 

  • Withdrawal from a course or courses, while staying enrolled in at least one credit for that term or session. 
  • Withdrawal from the entire term or session, or from KU completely. 

Please look closely at the charts below to determine where you may fit.  If you have Financial Aid, meet with them, as aid already received and disbursed, may have to be returned as not fully earned, causing you to owe back refunds or pay for charges incurred.

We strongly urge students who receive financial aid in any form, who are considering a withdrawal, to speak with the Financial Aid office to review the implications of a withdrawal on their aid package (W's are credits attempted but not completed).  In most cases, a withdrawal will require funds to be returned to lenders, and if a student has already received a refund, they may owe those funds back to the University.

The refund policies listed below are based on the start of the semester or session, NOT the course start date.

The percentages below are the amounts that the charges (with the exception of the Technology Fee, which is a non-refundable fee) would be reduced or refunded by; it does not necessarily mean the student is guaranteed entitlement to a refund.  The student will be responsible for the balance not refunded on the charges.  If the bill has not yet been paid, the student will receive a notice of funds due, and the normal collections process will commence.

Listed below you will find: Withdrawal from a Course, Withdrawal from the University, Winter Withdrawal and then Summer Withdrawal.

Withdrawal from a Course

Total tuition and tuition fee charges (with the exception of the technology fee, which is non-refundable) invoiced will be refunded (reduced) at the following rates; the difference will be the student's responsibility.  A portion of, or all of, a student's aid may be returned to the lender based on the withdrawal as it was not fully earned.  The amount due will then become the responsibility of the student.  We strongly urge students who receive any aid, who are considering withdrawing from a course or courses, speak to the Financial Aid office to confirm the implications of a Withdrawal. 

Withdrawal from a course after the 100% Drop period, while remaining enrolled for that semester or session will result in no reduction of charges (or refund), but may result in a return of financial aid not fully earned.

Students that remain within the full-time range before AND after a course withdrawal may have no financial impact.  Full-time undergraduate students are 12-18 credits.

NOTE: The official date of withdrawal is the date the Registrar's Office receives written notification from the student with his/her original signature.

Withdrawal from Institution - PHEAA State Grant Recipients
A student must provide official notification of his or her intent to withdraw from the university in accordance with the university's withdrawal policy. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of PHEAA State Grant funds the student was originally scheduled to receive. State Grant recipients, who withdraw from the university, must have their State Grant re-evaluated based on the institution's refund policy. See WITHDRAWAL FROM INSTITUTION.

Withdrawal from Institution - Federal Aid Recipients
A student must provide official notification of his or her intent to withdraw from the university in accordance with the university's withdrawal policy. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of federal funds the student was originally scheduled to receive. Federal aid recipients, who withdraw from the university, must have their federal aid re-evaluated.

Withdrawal After First Day But Within Title IV Refund Period
If the student withdraws after the first day of classes, but prior to or equal to 60% of the number of days in the semester (not including breaks of 5 days or more), the percentage of Title IV (Federal) Aid retained will equal the number of days attended divided by the number of days in the semester. Federal regulations dictate the distribution order funds must be returned. See distribution order below.

We encourage students to be counseled by Financial Aid if they are financial aid recipients prior to making withdrawal decisions.  This is so that they fully understand the financial impact of their decision.  Contact Financial Aid
