Associate Professor of English

Difference Maker

Nominator: Sharayah Bower '14

Nominee: Dr. Jennifer Forsyth, Associate Professor of English

Sharayah's Memories: My personal life has always been an incredibly negative and difficult one, but it never stood in the way of my love for school-until my junior year.  I was considering dropping out of my undergrad program because of emotional stress.

At this point, I was enrolled in one of Jennifer Forsyth's Shakespeare classes. I honestly had no one else to talk to, so I met with her, cried to her, and listened to her tell me that I have so much potential. She helped me to calm down so that I could figure my out my life. She gave me any extensions I needed with readings and papers, although I had never asked for an extension before in my entire academic career.

She made me feel strong. Her encouragement and mentorship got me through my undergrad program and gave me the courage and ambition to apply for the English graduate program here at KU. I'm loving the English graduate program at KU, and presently am leading my degree with straight As.

I joke and say (to anyone who had read the book or seen the movie, "Matilda") that she is the Miss Honey to my Matilda.
