(Historical facts have been compiled from the KU Archives and Special Collections of the Rohrbach Library; the archives of the Keystone; Kutztown Patriot, Allentown Leader and Reading Eagle; and Beacon on the Hill by Dr. Lee Graver.)

August 19, 1862:  Henry Meyer, a millwright who writes poetry in Pennsylvania Dutch, enlists in the 148th Army Regiment and spends three years fighting in the U.S. Civil War.  He fights in battles at Chancellorsville, Va., and Gettysburg, Pa., before being wounded and losing his hand at Laurel Hill, Va.  Meyer went on to enroll at Union Seminary, now Albright College, in 1866 and then the Keystone State Normal School, from which he graduated in 1869.  Meyer was elected county superintendent of schools for Centre County in 1875 and then elected to the Pa. House of Representatives in 1882.  In 1890 he was elected a state judge for Pennsylvania.
