THE SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

THIS MONTH IN KU HISTORY

(Historical facts have been compiled from the KU Archives and Special Collections of the Rohrbach Library; the archives of the Keystone; Kutztown Patriot, Allentown Leader and Reading Eagle; and Beacon on the Hill by Dr. Lee Graver.)

In December 1938, Kutztown State Teachers College librarian F. Marie Foster declares to the local Rotary Club that the Borough of Kutztown needs a public library.  Foster, who was new to Kutztown, got her wish in 1941 when Louisa M. Gonser bequeathed her home on Main Street be used as a free public library and YMCA.  The Kutztown Community Library opened its doors in 1949.
