Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a United States federal holiday, celebrated annually on June 19. It commemorates the final end of slavery in the U.S. on June 19, 1865, when Union Army general Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for slaves in Galveston, Texas, the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery. The word Juneteenth is a portmanteau (a blend of words in which parts of multiple words are combined to form a new word) of June and nineteenth. The day is also celebrated outside the United States, being used by organizations in a number of countries to recognize the end of slavery and to honor the culture and achievements of African Americans.

There are local celebrations that you may want to attend:
- Berks/Reading: June 17-19, Berks Lodge #47, 237 Walnut Street, Reading
- Lehigh: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., June 18, SteelStacks, Bethlehem
