SOCIETY OF PHYSICS STUDENTS (SPS) RECOGNIZED AS DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER TWO YEARS RUNNING
The participation, activities and outreach efforts of the Society of of Physics Students (SPS) have propelled their chapter to two consecutive years of being awarded a distinguished chapter award for 2014-2015. The SPS is a professional association explicitly designed for students which exists to help students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community. The SPS was formed in 1968 and has over 700 campus chapters across the country. The SPS Kutztown chapter's efforts include the annual laser light shows at Kutztown University's planetarium and the annual "Cantalobber" Contest, among numerous other activities.

THE SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

THIS MONTH IN KU HISTORY

(Historical facts have been compiled from the KU Archives and Special Collections of the Rohrbach Library; the archives of the Keystone; Kutztown Patriot, Allentown Leader and Reading Eagle; and Beacon on the Hill by Dr. Lee Graver.)

March 14, 1872:  Dr. Abraham R. Horne is inaugurated as the second principal of the Keystone State Normal School.  He serves until 1877.  The school has an enrollment of 140 and ten faculty members.
 

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
The next University Curriculum Committee (UCC) meeting of the 2015-2016 academic year will be held on March 24.  The deadline for submission of all proposals for this meeting is 12 p.m. (noon) on Thurs., March 10.  Please submit new proposals prior to this deadline to the UCC SharePoint Drop Off Library, at http://intranet/sites/committees/ucc/submissions.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. French at ext. 3-1312.

STUDENT COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Application Deadline:  Monday, March 14, 2016
Applications will be accepted from graduating seniors cleared to walk at the spring 2016 Commencement ceremony. 
In order to be considered for this distinction, a candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:

·         be cleared to participate in the spring 2016 commencement ceremony

·         have a grade point average at or above 3.0

·         demonstrated service to the university community and a record of good university citizenship and cooperation

·         demonstrated evidence of meaningful co-curricular involvement

·         be in good disciplinary standing

·         must be available to interview and present your speech (speech need not be memorized)

In addition, each candidate must submit a completed application available at:  http://www.kutztown.edu/Documents/Commencement/Speaker Application UG.pdf
Finalists will be chosen to participate in an interview process to determine the candidate of choice who will be expected to provide a brief address that communicates the spirit of the day (approximately 3-5 minutes) at the spring 2016 Commencement ceremony.

Golden Bear Food Court, first floor South Dining Hall, will be closed for renovation.
South Side Café, second floor South Dining Hall, will be open throughout the spring semester.

Saturday, March 12 & Sunday, March 13 - CLOSED

STUDENT REC CENTER & POOL
The Student Recreation Center and Keystone Hall Swimming Pool will be operating under the following special hours during spring break:

6 a.m.-6 p.m. 

Pool 8 a.m.-9 a.m. & noon-1 p.m.

Saturday, March 12

CLOSED

*Last day of group exercise classes will be Thursday, March 3, and they will resume on Sunday, March 13.

GOLDEN BEAR ATHLETICS

KU MEN'S BASKETBALL RECEIVES INVITE TO BIG DANCE
The Kutztown University men's basketball team had its ticket punched to the big dance on Sunday evening. KU earned an at-large bid and the fourth seed in the Atlantic Region during the NCAA Selection Show, and is heading to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history.  The Golden Bears (21-6) will face fifth-seeded West Chester (23-6) in the First Round of the Atlantic Region Tournament on Saturday, March 12 at Wheeling Jesuit University, the top-seed and one of eight regional hosts in the tournament. Game time is still to be determined.  This is Kutztown's fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the first since earning back-to-back trips in 2009 and 2010. KU's first-ever national tournament came in 1998
