Allentown Band Side By Side Concert
On Sunday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium, the Allentown Band will present its 11th Annual Side by Side Concert with 50 of the area's top high school musicians performing side by side with the Allentown Band. Tickets are $10.00 at the door.  Dutch composer and conductor Johan de Meij will share conducting responsibilities with Ronald Demkee for the concert.   De Meij received his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.  His award-winning original compositions, symphonic transcriptions and film score arrangements have garnered international acclaim and have become permanent fixtures in the repertoire of renowned ensembles throughout the world. His Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings has been recorded by a myriad of ensembles that includes The London Symphony Orchestra.  He currently maintains posts with both the New York Wind Symphony and the Kyushu Wind Orchestra in Fukuoka, Japan.  He is the appointed regular guest conductor of the Simón Bolívar Youth Wind Orchestra in Caracas, Venezuela - part of the celebrated Venezuelan educational system El Sistema.  This will be his first Lehigh Valley engagement.

May 20, 1857:  Pennsylvania passes the Normal School Act of 1857.   Its passage created 12 normal school districts in the commonwealth.  Private corporations, answerable to the state education superintendent, could open one normal school in each district.



Volunteers play a key role in the success and longevity of the Kutztown Folk Festival. Volunteer greeters meet guests with a "hello" and a smile as they enter the Festival gates. Hand out daily programs, answer questions and assist with directions. If you have a few hours available, why not join the team and make a difference!
